Life Teaching a 15 year old to drive...

We just made it out of the driveway and no more than 200 yards down the road before I had to stop and drive home. In that 200 yards my daughter almost hit a parked car and almost went into someone's yard. To be fair the only thing I have for her to learn in is a nice F150 that Ive put some money into making fast but holy shit I dont think I can do that again. I think it also scared her out of wanting to try again for awhile at least.

Same thing happened when my youngest brother got his learner's permit. He stomped on the gas with the car in reverse and nearly put us in a ditch. My response: "Ok, good first try; we'll try again tomorrow." He never touched my car again.

My parents did that same bullshit to me the first time out. They were both screaming at me and distracting me... it was ****ing terrible. I took drivers ed instead and told my parents I wouldn't be taking any further lessons from them.

I didn't drive again with my parents until I had my full license for almost a year.

Do your kid a favor and put her in drivers ed.

Jesus. Why would you teach your kid to drive on the street? Teach her in an empty parking lot. Get some cones as well if you want to teach parking.

I'm completely shocked that your kid didn't just hop in the truck and magically have the ability to drive on the street.

As pr said: Driver's Ed. Driver's Ed is required in VA to get a License.

I never drove my parents' cars growing up. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever driven my parents ever.

That was the original plan but she threw a fit and said she could do it. Supposedly she drove in the country one weekend staying with her friend at her grandparent's lake house.

We'll find one tomorrow.

I did a Driver's Ed program through the local university. I'm sure even if there isn't one at her high school there is something out there if you look a bit.

Would save you and her the drama.

My mother would make me laugh when my older sister was learning to drive. She would constantly gasp suddenly and brace against the dash for a crash, even when the potential crash was 30 seconds away and a block down the street. It would make my sister furious. I don't know if my mother did it out of legitimate and irrational fear or if she was being dramatic to scare my sister, but it was really distracting and probably increased the chances of an actual crash by 1,000 percent.
