Someone asked last night in the*Sunday Night Football Extra*live chat what I think about the decision of Fireman Ed to walk away from his status as the unofficial mascot of the Jets.

I said in response I try not to

.But it bears mentioning that the most recognizable fan of the most notorious NFL team has decided to pack it in.In a column written for*Metro New York, which Peter King explained last night is a free newspaper that no one reads, Ed Anzalone explains that he’s calling it quits because of*run-ins with other Jets fans.

“The stadium has become divided because of the quarterback controversy,” the Fireman formerly known as Ed wrote.* “The fact that I chose to wear a Mark Sanchez*jersey this year and that fans think I am on the payroll — which is an outright lie — have made these confrontations more frequent.* Whether it’s in the stands, the bathroom or the parking lot, these confrontations are happening on a consistent basis.”

So farewell, Fireman Ed.* It was nice knowing you.* Even though we didn’t know you.* And even though it wasn’t particularly nice.

Going to an NFL game isn't as enjoyable as it used to be. There are so many more antagonistic douche bags and miserable ****s than there used to be.

Are you talking about just the Chiefs or the NFL in general?

I suspect its still pretty fun for 49ers, Texans, Patriots, Denver fans....

There's a minor league hockey team that does it, according to a friend of mine. Other than that, it's unique to Arrowhead. I mean, not anymore, because we couldn't score a touchdown to save a dying orphan, but you know.

Jets are even worse off than the Chiefs are. Sanchez is obviously not the answer, especially with their lack of talent surrounding him. They are married to the guy right now. Tebow only compounds the problems.

I would imagine this is not really unique to the Jets and the split with fans. Is it weird for all the fuss to be made over this? Sure, but he's enjoyed the spotlight as a Super Fan ... well, here's the flipside.

I think I read that StevieRay hadn't worn the FDE stuff to the last couple of games - is that in protest to the current state of affairs or something similar to what this dude is dealing with in NY?

Losing sucks and it certainly affects the fan base... well, unless you're at a stadium like the Cowboys. They have fans that call security when people aren't sitting down. It's sad.

I feel badly for the guy. Obviously he's a Jets icon. Plus, his costume is excellent. But it is definitely annoying when "Superfans" start going on and on about how they're superior fans and turning around imploring the other fans to cheer. Fans know when to cheer. We don't need traffic cops. In summary, I offer a hearty "meh" for the entire ordeal.
