X-Factor's Inside the Huddle-REVENGE FINALLY

YACs and bean bags
lead to winning in KC

Five weeks into the 2011 season we’re finally looking like the Kansas City Chiefs of old. Old being the 2010 season. Old being a team which actually has a running game. If we’re going to find success it’s going to be in our ability to establish a rushing attack and we saw that against Indianapolis. Jackie Battle had a career high 119 yards - 6.3 yards per carry - and we had a season high 198 yards rushing. And some said it couldn’t be done without Jamaal Charles.

Back in August there was discussion about how many runningbacks should KC keep on its roster. At the time I was pulling for Battle to make the cut because I could see him as a good insurance policy. What he did on Sunday was more than that. He may have just saved Kansas City’s season.
Sunday’s win was significant on two fronts.
•The 17-point comeback matched the largest ever in Chiefs history.
•This was Kansas City’s first-ever win over the Indianapolis Colts, ending a drought going back 21 years. The last time we beat the Colts they were still in Baltimore.

We’re also seeing the result of head coach Todd Haley’s emphasis on conditioning during the pre-season. It was evident during the second half of the San Diego game, which we had an opportunity to win, and in the last two wins over Minnesota and Indy. Early in the second half on Sunday, KC players were coming off the field saying, “Indy is done,” because they could see that the Colts were gasping for air. And they were done.

But there’s something even more significant that we saw on Sunday which is a direct reflection of Haley and his coaching style. What bothered Haley even more than his team’s 1-3 record entering the Indy game was the fact KC was dead last in the NFL in YACs. What’s that? Yards after catch for the receivers and yards after contact for the runningbacks.
Against San Diego, we had two YACs. That’s not average. That’s total . . . as in we made a total of two yards after every reception.. That’s beyond comprehension in the NFL.

Against Indy, the Chiefs had 260 YACs. In other words, more than half of our 436 total yards against the Colts came after the catch or contact. That’s the equivalent of 2-1/2 football fields of field position. Wideout Dwayne Bowe had 128 total receiving yards - 70 of those were YACs.

Just imagine if we’d have done half of that against San Diego. You have to think that another 130 yards would have led to a game-tying field goal, or possibly a game-winning touchdown.Wide receiver Steve Breaston, who played for Haley when he was an offensive coordinator at Arizona, isn’t surprised. He has credited Haley’s emphasis on YACs with making them one of the top receiving groups in the league when they reached the Super Bowl.
Never giving up can happen in different ways.

It is reflected in a team’s ability to erase a 17-point deficit. It’s evident when a better conditioned team is able to wear down their opponent. And it means not going down on the initial contact, but finding a way to make an extra yard or an extra 10 yards. We’re seeing there is no quit in the Chiefs. Haley won’t let that happen.

Want to know something else that could figure into Kansas City’s turnaround? Bean bags . . . as in the game. You know what I’m talking about. You may have one at home or probably played them at a school carnival. You stand about 15-20 feet away from the clown’s face and you score points by tossing a bean bag between one of the openings.

Walk through the parking lot at Arrowhead Stadium on any given Sunday and you’ll see bean bag games everywhere. You’ll also find them in the Chiefs’ locker room with the players competing as two-man teams after practice.
The idea is to build camaraderie and teamwork. It’s just another way that Haley is trying to create better team chemistry. It beats the heck out of having players sitting around playing video games. And the players love it. They’re playing every chance they get.Rumor is that the Chiefs are getting so good they’re banned from competing at any school carnivals in the Kansas City area.

You may have noticed an unshaven Haley walking the sideline at last Sunday’s game. He plans to stay that way as long as the Chiefs are winning.

I thought Xfactors explanation of the event in doubt was more than acceptable and beyond what he owed anyone.
He was pretty gracious about having his integrity questioned. I doubt many around here would have handled it as well.
