Nobody outside of Jackson County knows about H Roe Bartle.

Simplest conclusion to draw is that the Chiefs are the AFC equivalent of the Redskins and is therefore a racist name too.

I remember not that long ago, when lots of people were just as confident as you are here that gay marriage would never become legal in the US. I thought they were wrong too.

Reading up more on this, it looks like other nations would be free to not give the Redskins trademark protection under our treaties, but within the borders of the US, they may still be able to protect their name under common law. Its more difficult to protect a name that way, but still possible.

So the impact might be very minor (other than the PR aspect of being judged to be disparaging), which is fine. The Redskins name is not going to change through the courts, only through overwhelming public condemnation.

Willing to bet that the NFL and Dan Snyder settle (pay-off) with the group that is suing to continue to use the name.

So you are serious then.

Chiefs is not a racially offensive term, to argue otherwise is ridiculous.

It doesn't need to be offensive. It just needs to be deemed so by people with enough money or influence to make the NFL believe that keeping the name will wind up costing the league money.

You are using the slippery slope argument, which is usually dumb because it relies on the assumption that we're all too stupid to draw lines.

You are arguing that if we condemn a horribly racist team name, then everything else is on the table no matter how innocuous. That is a dumb argument. We are smart enough to draw lines, and that line is at Redskins.

If you are arguing about a vision of a far-distant future after we are all dead and our children's children's children are debating this, then I don't know what to say, but for the forseeable future, ignoring minor protests from fringe groups, it ends here.

So they are going to have to pay off the US patent office. Not some group that has a personal type issue with the name.

Why should anyone believe that people of today are better at drawing these lines than people from 10 or 20 years ago?
