Tell me about living in Las Vegas

Seriously considering a move in the next month to two months. I have some great job opportunities out there, and my wife and BIL have more opportunity out there as well. As much as I love where I'm at, adult Disneyland doesn't sound too bad either for a guy with no children. I have some questions I'm hoping some folks here can answer for me.

1. Where do I NOT want to live around Vegas?

2. Are there some temporary places available for us until we find long term housing?

3. My BIL works in the restaurant industry, and low level jobs. He's slightly mentally disabled but has a very good work ethic, and is self sufficient. What are average wages for just above low level jobs out there? What kind of tip money could a busser make in a decent restaurant?

4. How easy is it to get a pot card? I've seen sleep apnea, and all sorts of crazy shit getting you one of these in other states. How relaxed is it? And are there stores I can buy it from, or do I have to procure it on my own?

I'm sure I'll think of more as I go along, and feel free to throw in any pertinent information you think I should be aware of. I appreciate the insight, and info in advance.

When we went off the strip the town became very ordinary to borderline shit.

A huge positive is an airport that has connections to every major city in North America for dirt cheap.

No. We are just renting it. We've refrained from buying to this point for this very reason. We knew as soon as I developed the skill set necessary in my profession to make a large income we would probably split.

Nice. The wife has already mentioned that area, so I'll check it out some more. Thanks!

Yeah, I love to play. I've been in that environment before, just not to the scale of LV. If anything, I think it will become boring to me because of all of the access.

Interesting. I figured there would be something more to Vegas than just the strip. I am happy about cheap air fare though.

Thanks for the info fellas, keep it coming.

One of my very best friends lived in Henderson for about ten years, then Lake Las Vegas for about two years. He's now in SoCal.

Pro's:

1. Affordable housing, whether you're renting or buying. Nice winters, although cold for people on the West Coast. I doubt you'd have any issues with that.
2. Tons of shopping, great restaurants and "local" casinos, so you don't necessarily need to hit the strip. Lots of local bars and Sports bars, so catching your favorite team won't be an issue.
3. Four hour drive to Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean, five hours to Santa Barbara, San Diego and not much more to Mexico. Phoenix isn't too far, either.

Cons:
1. HOT. Expect a high electricity bill during the summer months.
2. Terrible traffic. The state seems to be constantly widening the freeways, so getting to the strip can be tortuous.
3. Lifestyle. While some people can control themselves around casinos, others can't. It seems pretty easy to become a gambler, especially if you have people visiting often. It's easy to piss away money for sure.

I was stationed around there from 1995-1999 while in the Air Force.

Do NOT live in or around North Las Vegas. It's a really rough area. It's a city on North Las Vegas Boulevard before you get to the Nellis area. We lived near the base and unfortunately, that's where our daughter got sent to middle school. Our first time with metal detectors and cops on campus, AT A MIDDLE SCHOOL! There are some other areas not great... Avoid areas around the Stratusphere to Old Downtown area. Henderson is nice, Southeast. A lot of folks when I was there were buying/renting on the West side towards Summerlan. All the West stuff is newest and nicer areas.

If you're without children, you should have a great time...lots of shows, obviously, and triple A baseball, and good eating. I had two young kids, and it's not the city for them. Dirty place, lots of panhandling, and sin-city kind of slaps them in the face.

You're in a bowl, surrounded by mountains, so smog is horrible at times. But, the wind blows almost all the time so it gets blown out. Also, there was a problem with humidity increasing while there...lots of people wanting grass and watering lawns and all the big casino water stuff and pools. The increasing humidity was making the heat a lot worse. Not sure if it's better yet...they made a 'rule' that new homes had to have 'desert' landscaping, no more grass.

The city is all about the service industry and your BIL shouldn't have any trouble finding work and getting a decent wage...not sure on the amount.

Here's something that not many think about. Car Insurance rates are ridiculous! My rates tripled from my mid-western, Omaha rates. We made the mistake of buying a house while in the military...about went bankrupt. My wife went to work (department store and telemarketing) and bailed us out.

I agree with Frazod about the addictive personality thing. If you or your wife has any problems with any addictions whether it be drinking, drugs, or especially gambling it's not a great place. Lots of people think they're winners and they'll take your last 20, and next month's mortgage if you have a problem.

Another thing...you're in a city in the middle of nowhere. Everything is a 6 hour drive...Phoenix, 6 hours, LA, 6 and so on. Nothing's just a half hour out of town. I'd guess it's like being on an island although I've never been to an island.

There was lots of work back then in the construction industry. But, things in the housing market crashed really bad, especially there. Not sure how things have recovered.

I've lived here for 16 years and I really love it.
Always something to do, yet if you won't to have chill time that's good too.
Summerlin is great, Green Valley is good too. I live in Summerlin by Red Rock.
It's hot 2-3 months out of the year. Our yearly average is 80. We don't have ****ed weather stuff like tornados or hurricanes. It gets windy and allergies suck.
As far as weed is concerned, I don't know, but Cali isn't far.
Speaking of that, you are 3-4 hour drive from LA, the beach or 2-3 hours from kick ass hiking like Zion. We also have good hiking and outdoorsy stuff in Red Rock and Mt Charleston.
As far. Single life, it can be difficult, especially on men because of the stripper mentality here, but you won't mind that at first I'm sure
If you can make good money here, you will live well

I'm hearing there might be some opportunities coming from a new business here in Omaha. Apparently the regional manager is a smart, good-looking son bitch, too.

We have casinos and old people and trannys so it's like Vegas, only colder.

I can leave my home in Hollywood and be on the Vegas strip in 3.5 hours driving about 75 miles an hour (the speed limit is 70).

134>210>15. The freeways have been widened so it's a breeze. It's not like t was nearly 15 years ago.

The market crashed but it's recovering, although about 25% of that market was foreclosed upon, meaning great deals can be had.
