Tell me about living in Las Vegas

Seriously considering a move in the next month to two months. I have some great job opportunities out there, and my wife and BIL have more opportunity out there as well. As much as I love where I'm at, adult Disneyland doesn't sound too bad either for a guy with no children. I have some questions I'm hoping some folks here can answer for me.

1. Where do I NOT want to live around Vegas?

2. Are there some temporary places available for us until we find long term housing?

3. My BIL works in the restaurant industry, and low level jobs. He's slightly mentally disabled but has a very good work ethic, and is self sufficient. What are average wages for just above low level jobs out there? What kind of tip money could a busser make in a decent restaurant?

4. How easy is it to get a pot card? I've seen sleep apnea, and all sorts of crazy shit getting you one of these in other states. How relaxed is it? And are there stores I can buy it from, or do I have to procure it on my own?

I'm sure I'll think of more as I go along, and feel free to throw in any pertinent information you think I should be aware of. I appreciate the insight, and info in advance.

Humidity is like 10%.. Nothing.

That said, it's not anything at all like Midwest heat. The humidity that Carlotta referenced is infinitesimal compared to Missouri or Florida heat. I often complain when it's "humid" in Los Angeles, only to find out it's like at 50%.

I wouldn't worry about the heat. All the homes have swimming pools, as do the apartment complexes and of course, work spaces have powerful air conditioning. That shouldn't even be a factor in your decision, IMHO.
Yep, heat shouldn't be a factor. 2 months out of the vs 10 months

I'll be a shorts all year round guy. And 2 months of heat is less than what I deal with here. I don't figure it will be much different in actuality, other than the lack of humidity and the warmer weather the rest of the year. If it factors, it factors favorably.

I think you'll be fine with the weather. It's a "dry" heat.

The biggest issue in moving to Vegas is the gambling. It's a very seductive mistress and most people have to be very, very careful not to piss away their earnings.

I learned my lesson way back in 1995. I moved to LA in 1993 and would often do the drive to Vegas to party and gamble (and this was back when there were $1, $3 and $5 tables, everywhere, unlike now). I'd do well early in the night but the more I drank, the more I lost. I'd lose $400 a weekend, which at that time, was little more than I was earning net taxes per week.

I finally had a decision to make: Gamble or drink. Either or. Not both.

Drinking won.

I rarely, if ever, have gambled in Vegas since then. It's all about friends, drinking, eating, etc. since.

Good luck to you!

I do like to gamble. A lot. But it's something I got a good strong handle on at a younger age. I have pretty easy access right now. It's only a 2 hour drive to the local casino. We go as often as we want, but limits, and control aren't issues so it's not something I worry about. I know the access is going to be crazy, but it's something I really don't think we'll have a hard time dealing with.

Okay, good, but please do be careful.

My friend that lived there didn't have a propensity to gamble but before he knew it, he was blowing $2-3 grand per weekend (he was earning, so he didn't go in debt or bankrupt).

But he sure wishes he hadn't blown that much dough.

In the Midwest in the summer, you walk outside and are sweating within 10 seconds because of the humidity. In Vegas, it's hot as shit, but it's like when you open an oven--dry. I prefer the dry heat over the humidity, but 110 is ****ing hot regardless.

My son moved to Vegas 2 years ago and loves it. You do not want to live north of the strip. South and the West parts are the best. The Casino's treat their employee's like shit. Most jobs are part time and no vacation time the first year.

Bob Dole lived at Painted Desert GC for a little over a year and worked in North Las Vegas. Once you get used to the fact that it seems that 90% of the residents are assholes from CA, and get away from the strip, it's pretty much like living in any other city.

Be prepared to pick people up at the airport and act as tour guide 3 weekends a month.
