There's android "find your post phone"apps type for this kinda thing. The main problem is that often the app needs to be on the device. You'll just have to find one that doesn't. Also, you're phone the phone companys (ie Samsung) website for ways to track lost devices. Also, like someone else said, you're probably better off posting this in the lounge.

no, they won't. Most of the software apps install invisibly. Many require direct access to the phone, but not all. Some can be installed remotely and invisibly.
