Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Friend of mine talked me into seeing it in the theater. Luckily, they paid.

I viewed it last night and I'm not really sure what to think just yet as far as interpretation but I certainly did enjoy (enjoy may not be the best term here) the ride. A fairly simple story with copious, heavy handed symbolism that I haven't been able to wrap my mind around all of just yet and don't want to get into because of spoilers.

Artsy and abstract to the levels of David Lynch (totally different style than Lynch however) but much darker. I have to watch this one a second time to see if I can understand it better.

This is going to be one of those 'love it or hate' movies but I'd say it's worth a view for nothing else than being so unique.

****ing dig that movie. Easily on of my favorites from the past few years. The last act didn't quite work the first time I watched it but after a second time it wasn't a weakness. Great directing and even better score.

Definitely watch Moon if you haven't already.

There is a visceral anti-psychological therapy theme. The film is loaded with sexual violence. The acting is damn good.

I just haven't pieced it all together yet. I need to think more about Biblical allusion and allegory.
Just watched this a second time for the same reason I get sucked into Lynch Movies; I want to try and makes heads or tails out of what I just witnessed.

I didn't view it as misogynistic or even very biblical on the second viewing. Just an artistic view on a characters decent into madness, a lot like 'The Shining' actually. The symbolism was kind of a smorgasbord of 'all the above' to try and pin it down as a central theme as to what was going on.

If you have any background into "the three beggars" I'd love to know what, if anything that means. I won't be watching it again however, it's not a pleasant movie at all. If you get nightmares easily, this would be a movie to provide them in spades.

I really wouldn't recommend this to anyone who doesn't go in with the intent of simply trying to unravel an abstract film or enjoys really dark ****ed up movies. It's about as fun as a root canal.

EDIT: just adding some stuff after thinking about it more.

I can't disagree. Inglourious Basterds might have been my favorite this year with Moon as a close second. Pretty tough to beat the directing, score and most of all Rockwell.

In parts and in little ways in was almost really good. But in the end the overall direction and the screenplay lets it down. Rental quality.

Just got done watching Hurt Locker and 2012 a couple of days ago.

Normally, I really like post-apocalyptic, the world is over kinda movies. 2010 flat-out sucked hard.

Hurt Locker was pretty good. I dig the main actor -- he was pretty good in 28 Weeks Later too.

I just watched an odd mockumentary on Netflix Instant Watch called Big Man Japan. The non-monster stuff got boring after awhile, but the ending and final credit sequence are great.

I checked it out from the library and watched it today. This pretty much describes what I thought about it.

Last night and today....

Pandorum. Meh.
The Box. Lame.
Moon. Excellent.

I picked up Precious from the Red Box this evening, and got Sexy Beast in from Netflix. Those are on the schedule, along with an assload of laundry and sitting around the house, for tomorrow.
