If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

As long as Reid doesn't try to round peg him into a square hole, he'll be productive.

I recognize, however, that better than bad does not equal good.

He's the very epitome of JAG.
Significant upgrade to what we've had at the position for nearly a decade.

And I'm assuming that Smith will mesh exceptionally well with the personnel on the roster. His game fits with Bowe's talent/abilities to a "T," and I think you'll see Baldwin and the other receivers get into the game a bit more than what you've seen the past two years. Fasano and Kelce are also nice additions that will work with Smith. I also expect Charles to be able to put up some seriously sick numbers this next season. (A healthy Hudson and the Schwartz addition will be a boon to Jamaal along with either Stephenson or Fisher at RT, though I would rather see a offensive line of:

LT: Fisher
LG: Albert
C: Hudson
RG: Schwartz
RT: Stephenson

to fully benefit the team by getting all of the best players on the line at one time.)

Unlike Cassel, Smith is able and willing to go through his progressions and will get the ball to the open receiver.

I like what the team will put out in terms of offensive and defensive philosophy in 2013. Stable, calculated ball control offense that should control the time of possession and field position allowing our high end playmakers (Bowe and Charles) to do just that. It will also keep our defense fresh and allow Houston and Hali to be substantially more effective deeper into the game.

Looking at what they've done with the draft and free agent acquisitions, our Pro Bowl players are really going to get a chance to shine even more so this next season. I can't complain too much about that.

And why do you emphasize throwing it downfield every day? I didn't realize we were throwing it deep every time we pass.
Because that's all he understands. If you're QB, you have to throw deep or you have to throw 300 yards.

It was recommended to him by drew brees who went through the same thing. Pretty great read if you can find the article, interesting guy. That hit by Rocky Bernard that blew his shoulder up was brutal. I wont say he is injury prone. In todays NFL you just cant play with a concussion anymore. The shoulder injury has long been behind him, to say that is like saying i worry about Tom Brady's ACL every year.
Yep.. good post. To add, while Alex doesn't have that freak cannon arm that Kaepernick has, his arm strength definitely improved after working with Tom House. His arm strength and deep pass game is not a concern. He wasn't asked to throw it deep often. Between problems with pass protection, lackluster deep play WRs, and conservative offense built around high percentage keep-away, this fallacy of Alex being incapable of throwing deep is an eye-roll for me.

Check down to who exactly? Frank Gore caught 33 passes over the last 2 years from Smith. Who was he checking down to? Vernon Davis?

Do I think Andy Reid is going to get more than 16 touchdowns out of Alex Smith? Yes. I don't think you are going to see a conservative offense.

But I'm not going to pretend, like you constantly do, to know exactly how this offense will look in comparison to the one Harbaugh called until I can see actual games and the progress or regression here.

It's funny you keep whining about checking down when the QB that you loved more than just about anyone but Sacco and SNR threw about 70% of his passes on checkdowns and short routes.

Be careful though, despite how much you banged the drum for Geno, you'll be lumped into the asshole optimism group.

I agree with almost everything here, especially the O-Line package you prefer.

Th eone thing I would debate is how quickly Alex Smith gets through his progressions.

I believe, like you, that he does read defenses more effectively than Cassel, but he doesn't get through is progressinon nearly fast enough to really maximize his effectiveness.

Lol. I'm going by facts.

The first year he didn't get them there.

Last year his coach obviously did not think he could get then there, that's why he was benched

He gets through them just fine he just NEVER see's a man open enough.

Watch the Bengals vs. 49'ers game from 3 years back. There was no pressure on him. Neither offense could accomplish jack $#it. Bengals stacked vs. the run.

There was no pressure.

He went full-dank-diaper until the 4th quarter.

This is the perfect example of a guy who plays better when he DOESN'T over-think...

I'm very curious to see what Reid will do with Alex Smith in a more aggressive pass offense.

He was top 10 in fewest INT's, accuracy, yards per completion, total QBR and was proven to be accurate all over the field when he threw.

I keep hearing about how he doesn't make the bad play.

How often does he make the right (winning) play?...

Quite a bit actually. Remember the winning pass against the Saints with 9 seconds left. The go ahead TD on 4th down to Delanie that won the Lions game if he doesnt hit that they lose. He is unselfish he will do a presnap read and audible to a running play if he thinks it will work. Gores YPC dropped with Kaepernick because Kaepernick couldnt do that(yes he brought other things to the table but Gores YPC dropped by about a yard with Kaep under center so did Vernons production)

You got a good player. Still getting better. I am a die hard Smith fan though. I know everyone doesnt like him but he is a smart player he just played with trash most of his career.
