They aired the tornado episode of Mike and Molly that was postponed due to the first OK tornado Thursday night.

It's really hard to believe. There's a photo of their vehicle floating around the internet now. Completely destroyed... definitely looks like they were hit directly by the tornado.
Here's a great video about Samaras and his team. He not only studied tornadoes but lightning and hail as well. |

I wasn't down in OK on Friday, but I still have close connections to people who were. From what I here there were 2 main factors in a lot of chasers getting caught, and possibly a 3rd with Samaras' team. 1) The storm did something not entirely out of the realm of what might happen, but not typically expected either (as evidenced by its wild path). 2) There was a massive storm chaser convergence in the area. Some were experienced and knew what they were doing but got caught in traffic, others are the idiot yahoos who were causing traffic jams. Some of the guys I know barely escaped danger because of this. 3) No official word, but Samaras and team do put themselves in some danger by trying to get in front of the storm and drop probes for research, that's their job (and they knew the risks)... however, word I got is they might have been having some car trouble as well at the time--don't know for sure, so that just qualifies as speculation. Back to the idiot yahoo thing, though--when I'm chasing and I'm on back roads, country roads, etc., traffic is usually non-existent--no problems. Then I get back to the main roads, and every body and their grandmother are lining the streets, stopping dead in the middle of a main highway to gawk or hang out their window and snap a photo, driving recklessly, cutting in front of others, etc. When I take people chasing I give them two rules: 1) You do what I say w/o question or hesitation and 2) you do not freak out--b/c as the experienced and knowledgeable one, I'm responsible for my safety, the safety of my car, and the safety of those in my car, and I can't have hesitation or distraction. B/c to me and a lot of other experienced chasers, safety is more important than any picture, any view, any shot. I'll forego the best picture to keep myself safe any day. Why? B/c experience chasers have respect for each other, respect for the rules of the road, and respect for that massive beast of a storm that can and does end lives. Guys like Samaras and Mike Bettes (from TWC, whose car got tossed but they survived) fit the category of experienced chasers with respect. So something obviously went dreadfully wrong. But the road is getting more and more packed with morons who have zero respect for any of that and just simply want to get the money shot. They're too arrogant and stupid to stay home and stay safe, but they cause a heck of a lot of gridlock that gets in the way of the scientists, the first responders, and the experienced chasers. Their stupidity makes it a lot more dangerous for the rest of us... and I'm almost ready to hang up my hat on something I love because of it. |

Non data-collecting chasers will either try to be due east with a visual and a good road dropping south if they have to, or stay to the south and follow along beside it. The north to north east side of the tornado is usually where you have some of the worst rain and hail in a storm. I don't chase for research and I've been on the north side once, and I prefer not to do that again. I usually try to stick due south to a bit south east. |

I don't like those corporate sellout chasers like the guys in Twister.

KCCI.com probably has a clip of their Samaras story. They showed the car. Looked like it was hit by a train.

That before picture is not the same truck. It has black door handles and polished rims. The truck that is destroyed has white door handles and brushed aluminum wheels. Not that it matters, just making an observation.

Seeing reports on twitter that this tornado is officially an F5. Winds up to 296 mph. 2.6 miles wide at its peak. Widest tornado ever recorded in the US.

That monster tornado turned that GMC Sierra in to a Saturn Aura in mid-air. That's some sort of cruel joke mother nature is playing right there..
