The Big 12 must step in and fire Quin.

link

Look, no one has taken more pleasure the last couple of years in MU basketball than me. And turning a program into the laughing stock of the nation isn't easy, so Quin deserves a lot of credit for being so profoundly incompetant.

But, MU's faux-basketball team is now causing problems for the league. We need to be competitive with the ACC, we need our 2nd tier teams to be borderline top 25. We need this for RPI, and for bringing in the best recruits, and for simple "fun games to watch" sake. So, I think the Big 12 should step in and remove Quin. Then they can promote a C.I.A. funded puppet named Allaw....whoa, wrong forum...

The Big 12 North needs some quality rivalry for the fans, and for TV.

Its one thing to be KSU basketball. Its another, far worse thing to be compared to KSU basketball. Time for drastic measures.

Thrill is long gone for Tigers

By JOE WALLJASPER Tribune sports editor
Published Wednesday, December 8, 2004

Muscle memory indicated that this was a big game. In the 1990s, Missouri vs. Arkansas didn’t necessarily have the give-and-take of a great rivalry - the Razorbacks did most of the winning - but it always was an event. Long before tipoff, the crowds crackled with anticipation.

Before last night’s renewal of the rivalry at Mizzou Arena, the only audible crackles came from the occasional nacho-eater, easily heard above of the low murmur in a sparsely filled palace. Although every seat and luxury suite was sold before the season, the arena hasn’t been more than two-thirds full, and last night was no exception. After watching the Tigers struggle and strain to convert a layup or free throw in a 62-52 loss to the grateful Razorbacks, you wonder how many of the 10,086 in attendance will come back for more.

It’s stunning how quickly Missouri basketball games, even against former rivals, have become nonevents. One year ago at this time, MU was ranked fourth in the country. It seems like a decade. Mizzou Arena feels like Bramlage Coliseum when Baylor’s in town. It feels like the Devaney Center when Texas A&M is visiting. And it looks increasingly likely that the Tigers will be breathing the same musty air in the Big 12 standings as the likes of Kansas State and Nebraska.

Missouri’s players are aware that the atmosphere of today bears no resemblance to what they saw on their recruiting visits. Senior guard Jason Conley said he blocks out those thoughts during games, but they come back afterward.

"As soon as I leave the locker room, I always think about that. I think about all those fans. I think about the guys that buy my jersey, guys that hold up signs for everybody," he said. "I think about that all the time, because I’m just letting them down almost."

Of course, Conley isn’t really letting anyone down and owes no apologies. During last night’s game, he hit the floor for loose balls and kept out-of-reach offensive rebounds alive by tipping them to teammates. He did the best he could. He also went 0 for 3 from 3-point range and turned the ball over three times without an assist.

He had company in that regard. The Tigers (4-4) played hard - that wasn’t the issue - but they didn’t play well. They haven’t all season. Jimmy McKinney was 1 for 8 from the field with five turnovers and no assists. Thomas Gardner was 2 of 10, including 0 for 5 from 3-point range. Jason Horton shot 0 for 7. In two minutes, Spencer Laurie’s only dent in the stat sheet was two turnovers.

There will be more nights like this, I’m afraid.

MU used nine players last night, and only two of them - McKinney and Kevin Young - have spent more than two years in the program. It’s a rebuilding season, plain and simple, but the timing is all wrong for that. If MU’s talented team of last year hadn’t bombed, if Ricky Clemons and the NCAA investigators had never come to town, if the underachieving football team hadn’t put everyone in a foul mood, if Paige Laurie had done her own homework - lots of ifs - then these Tigers would simply take their lumps and Quin Snyder would work his chewing gum a little less nervously.

But all those undesirables did happen, and it’s as if this team is carrying that burden, waiting for the next bad thing, having no fun in the process. Unlike last season, when we all expected Rickey Paulding, Arthur Johnson and Travon Bryant to don their capes and save the season just in time, there is little optimism this year.

Arkansas is 6-1 and appears to be an improved team in Coach Stan Heath’s third year, but the Razorbacks were 12-16 last season. It’s the kind of team you have to beat at home. Far stiffer challenges are on the horizon.

What painful tricks does No. 1 Illinois have in store in the Braggin’ Rights game, what sort of damage will disciplined Gonzaga inflict, what punishment awaits on visits to Stillwater, Okla., and Lawrence, Kan.? Perhaps that’s the reason Missouri fans have gotten out of touch with their emotions. At the moment, it makes more sense to remain uncomfortably numb.

Joe Walljasper can KMA.

KSU, while hitting the skids for the last 15 years, outclasses the MUt's basketball program in every way imaginable.
NCAA appearances, Regional Finals appearances, Final Four appearances (4). Championship game appearances (2).

Mizzou is the all time leader in Big 8/12 "All Hype, Zero Accomplishment category.

So, uh, "Hey Joe!! fuck YOU!!"
