Camera Suggestions?

Ok;

so the wife and I are in the market for a camera. We previously had a Sony digital camera for about 10 years but the wife dropped it and now it won't hold any settings etc.

So, it's time for another one. I'm by no means a professional photographer; but I also don't want some little $100 POS either. I'd like to have one that I could 'grow' into if I wanted to so to speak.

I think My budget is about $400-$600. I was looking at the Nikon D3200 DSLR....though, admittedly, I'm not 100% what "DSLR" is.
I like the design of it; I've held a few like it and they're much easier to hold IMO.

Suggestions?

Thanks, but the Sams package includes a 200mm lense that is worth a lot more than $150.

If you have to ask you can't afford it.

You don't want to "buy" that anyway.

Usually the biggest lens you want to own is a 400mm and that is some serious cash.

And you can rent those anyway for the times when you might need one.

Just get a good quality Cannon or Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 and you'll be happy.

Sams has a kit bundle on sale for 429.00.

It's an entry level camera and lens but what the hell all you would need at this point is a real flash.

This would get your feet wet and once you get better and have the "bug" you can spend the cash.

Just enjoy the camera for now... If the deeper Photo bug bites you, come on back and we can provide a lot of detail on whatever you might want to do. Lenses can open a whole new world, but can equally frustrate if you get the wrong lens and try to save too much money, but that's a ways off.

I recommend you play with the menu system and get used to it, then play with Aperture Priority (and get a feel for Depth of Field) and Shutter Priority (and get a feel for motion and how to keep the subject in focus and to scatter the background). It's all fun...

I agree that a better-than-average flash can make all the difference in the world. The one that's built-in should only be used in case of an emergency...

Card readers are cheap now.

You should get Adobe Elements.

It's about 100.00 and it's all the editing software you will need.

You don't need Photoshop CS.

Besides it's like 700.00

Adobe is dumping that software model, moving to the Creative Cloud web apps. Subscription is $50/month and gives access to all the full range of Adobe Products.

The card ready was like $10 if I recall.
I think the software is the next in line.

I'm not looking forward to this.

I'm going to be forced to use what I have for awhile or start working with more of the public again.

so instead of buying the software, they're going to a monthly subscription model?

I'm not sure if they're doing away with Photoshop Elements, but the full versions are going to be subscription based only from here on. They're doing away with the CS naming and going by Creative Cloud.

I would suggest looking into Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. It's great for adjustments, color correction and touch-ups.

Meh, doesn't really affect me. I'm on CS2 now (I'd been using PS5 up until about a year ago).

Though I don't like the over all plan. I don't upgrade any software as soon as there's a new version, so the subscription model sucks because in 14 months I'd have spent enough to buy PS as a disc... more money for them, I guess. Probably a great deal for someone that uses a lot of their products.
