The Running Game
I like that perimeter running plays have been designed and practiced. Cloud and even Moreau might be able to break a few in this manner. It is also encouraging that Gun is talking about T-Rich being the best back on the team, in the opinion of others at least. I hope we see a lot of him. All in all I am not worried about the running game. I'm sure it will be fine. I just wish we had a split-backfield formation with Cloud/TR. The one fear that I know many of us have is the formations we use give away the plays we call.
|

The Passing Game
This doesn't inspire much confidence. Gonzo is great but he can't do it all alone. WRs have been poorly sought after by Grbac and this is worrying. Assuming the Chiefs offense doesn't change a whole lot to multiple WR sets, and the shotgun, we can expect a lot of 2TE sets and play-action. This will work again for one more season if Grbac can spread it around enough. My vote for the keys to this offense are Sylvester Morris and Troy Drayton. SlyMo needs to be able to stretch the field to open up the running game and the passes underneath to guys like Lockett and the TEs. I hope Grbac trusts him to go up and get the deep ball. He could have a better season than Horn did last year with his size, hands and talent. With all the coverage that Gonzo commands, I hope Drayton can cause havoc. He was the go-to guy in Miami a couple of seasons ago when they had no real playmakers at WR. I just want Grbac to be able to look his way once in a while. He could really make a difference IMO and take coverage away from Gonzo again. One of you regulars made a comment a few days ago on another thread that Drayton was "always" open. If Grbac recognises that too, we'll be rolling. JMO. I would appreciate any thoughts you guys might have! |

Cormac-
A hearty amen on a split backfield. I would like to see Richardson get a ton of carries and catches this season. Use him until the D keys on him, then slap ‘em with the pitch to Cloud or play action to Morris. I also want to see Cloud get mondo carries so we can see if he is The Man or not. If so, we can concentrate on our QBOTF. If not, we have to look for another HB again [AUGH!]. xoxo~ gaz not exactly expecting to see that split backfield.
|

I would like to think the -6 TO ratio in pre-season was a bad dream. This team until it shows an explosiveness, will have to keep control of the ball. NO TURNOVERS at all.

I want to see the two tight-end set with single back. The other teams will have to honor our power running, THEN flex gonzo out and voila, you have a passing set with the same personnel. Let's see Indy decide if they are going to keep a LB in to play the run or bring in the nickel package to cover Gonzo. We do have the personnel, we just need to have a plan that isn't so dang obvious.

Along the same line, use a pro formation with Gonzo split, then put him into motion. He can motion clear across the field to overload a zone, or hold up close to the line of scrimmage at the snap to give you a blocker or seal guy when you run. This really isn't rocket science. Deception, deception, deception!!!!

The key to the Chiefs offense is this, IMO:
Carl needs to stop believing that Grbac, Cloud, and Alexander can be a championship-caliber "big three". As a unit, they are probably the worst "big three" in the entire league. ------------------ This is my signature!! There are many like it but this one is mine!! |

Cormac,
Shouldn't the perimeter running plays, by re-defined as the perimeter running play. I really only recall seeing one play to the perimeter, and that is the quick pitch with Tait leading. At least the playbook has 3 plays instead of 2 this year. |

No, I saw a play I loved which will get big yards - A pitchout counter play. We fake the handoff to Richardson for the quick dive we used so much last year and then pitchout to Cloud going the opposite way. Alternating those two plays will keep them guessing and get us some yards.

I stand corrected. 4 plays in the book this year.

Woohooo! 4 plays? I'm feeling better already. The packers of the 60s and 70s only had 3!!

Thanks for the feedback guys! I like your ideas b-squared, I assume we will see Gonzo in motion a lot this season. That much at least should have been accomplished in the offseason renovation of the playbook!
LOL Coogs, I haven't seen the games, and hope that there will be a few variations in the outside running...I'm not holding my breath though. |
