Maybe GM Moore's first bad decision?
Royals' Grudzielanek gets extension for 2007
Mark Grudzielanek's contract extension with the Royals is worth $4 million and includes a player option for the 2008 season at $4 million to $4.5 million, depending on plate appearances next year. It sounded like a bad idea before we knew about the player option. Now it's quite a bit worse. There wasn't a team in baseball willing to give Grudzielanek $8 million over two years last winter. His big game tonight upped his OPS to 734, but that's still down from 779 in 2004 and 741 last year. He's played in 140 games once this decade, and since he's 36, he's only likely to get more fragile. There just isn't any upside at all here. He might be a $4 million player right now, but there's nowhere for him to go but down. I like him for this year and next, but 2008 at $4 million? Surely there would be someone else we could get by then. Just my $.02. |

He's one of the best infielder's in the game. This is a GREAT move-I'm not sure why anybody would be displeased or should I assume you PREFER Carlos Febles at 2nd base?

I like the move... he is a proven vet and we don't have anyone in the pipeline worth a damn to play 2nd.. maybe he can be the leader that Sweeney never was

The guy SHOULD win the gold glove this year, with our team... He brings solid veteran leadership to the infield..

You have to have some veteran leadership on the team. That, and we don't have ANYONE in the Minors who can man down 2b everyday.
I REALLY like this move. Now, if we can dump Sweeney, Samders and Berroa, I'll be a happy man.

Don't be shocked to see this infield in 2007.
3b - Gordon, SS - Gruds, 2b - Teahen, 1b - Shealy Great move by Dayton. Allard would've traded him to Detroit for a Class A relief pitcher. Go to a game and watch Gruds play every inning. Doesn't matter if we're up 10 or down 10, he plays at 110% and plays the game right.

$4 million doesn't buy you an all-star player on the open market. I'm not convinced that's so much above his market value. For a team that will likely be sorely lacking in any kind of veteran leadership after this season, it sounds like money well spent.
Isn't this what people wanted, anyways? The Royals throwing money at people who could play on playoff teams? Last edited by Eleazar; 08-17-2006 at 08:39 AM.. |

Count me among those who think that it is a good move. It shows that Moore is thinking about improving the team along all lines. The team needs veteran leadership and Grudz said all the right things about wanting to stay with the team. I think other teams wouldn't mind having a guy like him, and it reflects well on the organization that someone of his caliber is willing to stay in KC.
Put it another way, the Royals paid $4 million for Juan Gonzalez once. Which is the better investment? |

Im happy with the re-signing, the guy has been solid on offense and defense, you can't ask for much more. We need a vet or 2 around that can actually play.

It's a great move. We don't have anyone else even remotely close to being ready to play 2b. This will add a little stability to the position for the next couple of years.
FWIW, I think the dip in his OPS may have something to do with the lack of protection around him in the lineup. Pitchers don't really fear anyone in our lineup, except maybe Teahan. |

It's a good move.
great glove, doesn't miss games (hasn't this year), solid bat, good speed for an old guy, club-house leader, can fill in at SS when angel has his head up his ass unless he drops off considerably, it'll be great to have him for 2 more years
