Talks with Eric Berry for extension 'ramping up'

Per Ian Rapoport.

To the few out there who think we don't need this guy for a good price, happy to see that the front office is of course on the right side.

KC was terrible without 2 quality starting CBs....they could live without Berry. Drafting DJ's replacement should be priority #1...drafting S.Smiths replacement is #1a after they resign him. Chiefs could get two above average safeties for what EB will cost. In Sutton's scheme CB is more important...
EB makes as big of an impact as anyone on the team in terms of leadership. He was our leader last year. You can't put a price on that, and losing him would be incredibly negative in the locker room.

He's a safety, and he's pretty damn good. So what he got beat one time? Big deal. Did you McCourty get beaten by Owen ****ing Daniels in Denver?
Our run defense is better in part due to Berry and DJ. And they won't even cost that much.
$10m in today's NFL is basically $8m 3 years ago.

This team is young at a lot of key positions. Guys on their rookie contract (or cheap contract) all over.

I'm more worried about Colquitt and Grubbs massively inflated salaries next season.

Hey Dane, since you mentioned Poe, are you of the mind to extend the guy (this year if possible), or is his back injury cause for concern, especially for a guy so huge? Personally, I'm kinda torn on Poe. Clearly another highly rated guy who we drafted, but hearing about back injuries for a 350lber is rather worrisome.

In some ways, I think I'd attempt to lock up Howard and probably let Poe go next year (and get a comp pick). On the other hand, nose guards are essential in a 3-4, and Poe can definitely man that position better than Howard. Hmmmm....

What's your take???

I'd argue Colquitt is more important than Berry....with how Smith approaches the QB position. I know that sounds strange....but this team cant get behind two scores.

I do agree with Berry's locker room presence...but against top QBs, this defense looked like dogshit without S.SMith.

Yup, that Grubbs deal looks HORRIBLE right now. And, I definitely don't understand giving that much coin to a.......punter (even if he was team MVP for several years!).

I remember how many high draft picks KC wasted looking for a great NT...you dont let those get away. Poe is a rare dude...and is going to get paid like it.

No one will convince that safety is a more important position than CB/ILB/NT/rushers....even if you have one at a PB level.

I think I kinda like that approach too. Honestly, I've been going back and forth on the Poe thing.

In any event, it's gonna be an interesting month as we find out who we sign and don't sign.

Seriously, I said those words out loud while watching ALCS games this fall.
Lol

It's funny because I felt the same way about the Royals lineup.

Every player 1 through 9 was a tough out with the table setters being Escobar and Zobrist. Straight up they should've kept Zobrist though. He was spectacular in the playoffs.

I think losing him might hurt your offense a bit. You guys had better balanced hitting. Not a homerun hitting team but more for contact and excellent in the clutch. Great speed along the bases and every at bat was a grind it out work the count at bat. Marcus Stroman even said, "toughest team he's ever faced."

But the real strength of your team is the bullpen. You have the relievers that can stretch out games and Wade Davis, well, you guys are very lucky to have him lol....He's money and the best relief pitcher in the game today.

You know what though? With respect to bullpens, I say watch out for the Yankees bud. I think that trio of Betances, Miller and Chapman could compete with Herrera, Soaria and Davis. I still give KC the edge because of Davis but Miller and Betances>Herrera and Soaria.

It's a passing league. DB's are more important than ever, and not just CB's.

Eric Berry right now is more important than a 29 year old Sean Smith who is about to hit the downside of his career and would cost at least $10m more.

I think the Royals are better built for the playoffs because of great defense, clutch hitting and a dominant bullpen than the Jays but the Jays will still give them a run for their money.

If T.O. Had homefield, I think it would've gone to 7.

But Eric Berry isn't that important.

He can't hop into the slot, he can't cover outside. He's not a cornerback.

He's a great box safety and against non-elite TE's, he does a good job.

People overvalue the player because of their connection to him as a Chief since 2010.

Do you realize what is beyond ****ing stupid?

People saying that Alex Smith isn't a Franchise QB.

He's led a team to a 32-19 record, without the services of JC during the 11 game win streak, without Eric Berry for 8 games or whatever last year, without Houston for 7 games in 2013 and Hali for several games in between, without DJ for nearly all of last season, without Avery, the #2 WR for most of 2014 and with a shit offensive line that's in constant need of upgrading.

Yet people have no problem advocating that the Chiefs make Eric Berry, a box safety with few other skills, the highest paid safety in the league while paying Alex Smith "Franchise" money. Not elite but "Franchise".

This is the dumbest fan base outside of the Jets.

I agree, but we've got that guy in Parker for a cheap deal. Berry is Better than everyone gives him credit for. He did well at single high quite a bit last season.

With the cap rising, $10m is not that bad At all. Outside of Houston, you don't have much tied up in terms of heavy salaries.

Alex, Maclin and Houston are your big hits and they are worth the money.

Am I missing something? Do you all remember him making some MAJOR plays in winning games? Like I said, maybe I'm missing something, but I just don't see him as that game-changing type guy.
Completely agree and yes CP is absolutely enamored with a "good" player and the NFL jumped right on board this year too (all pro? bullshit). This is a product of the feel good cancer story IMO. Shit, people in this thread are saying he is top two in the league when he wouldn't even be starting on some teams (dramatic I know, but also true, Seahawks). I would say Berry barely, and I mean barely, is a top ten safety in the NFL and you could easily call that generous. The Bills game in particular where he was supposed to be helping on the outside WRs and the CBs got burned 3-4 times and CP was livid with the corners. I didn't see a single poster mention or notice that Berry was a yard or two away from the catch at most and he showed zero burst or even urgency to break up the play. He lolly gagged to the tackle ala Bartee and didn't even play the ball. If he had exploded or showed any sense of urgency in the final five yards of his pursuit he could have easily broken up at least 2 of them.

Jesus, hunted this down and it just pissed me off. He could have blasted Watkins easily and saved two TDs. "Top 2" safety my ass, got his ass handed to him by big bad Tyrod Taylor over and over again. I mean I appreciate the leadership and obviously the cancer thing is cool, but IMO just not that great of a player.
