Can Wal-Mart take over the U.S.?

Considering that any one of their stores can make a man fabulously wealthy, what's to stop them from taking over.

We've got those at our grocery store. They rule.

The only problem is that they were retrofitted in, so the line to the self-checkouts goes up the cereal aisle, which creates two problems. First, it's a pain to pick out cereal when it's busy. Second, you'll have a line of eight people or so waiting in the cereal aisle, and one time in ten someone will wander down the main front aisle right as a checkout opens up, and they won't see the line and will just cut right to the front. I've seen a couple of instances where it's caused some unpleasantries as they are either treated rudely by the people in line, or they're rude when they're informed about the line.

That aside, self-checkout is awesome.

Walmart sucks ass. They destroy small town businesses/economies as effectively as bombs. Go to the downtown area of any small town within 30 miles of one of those fucking things and try to find an open business. Good luck.

Where I live, the local Walmart is a piece of shit anyway - it's one of the older ones, is cramped, dirty and packed with scumbags. I've only set foot inside it once and will never go back. Target is much better, and certainly less evil.

Of course, I'm fortunate that I live in major metropolitan area and have the option to say no to the Beast.

Americans save thousands of dollars each year by shopping there. As someone suggested earlier, they have also managed to help hold down inflation in the retail industry.

Tell the average consumer that is bad for them.

True, but you can say that about any large mall destroying "mom and pop" stores. Same for Home Depot and Lowes. It happens. Sucks for the companies they knock out of business, but the consumer still wins.

It's scary, as a consumer, to think that evenually most of the goods you need can come from two places, Walmart and Home Depot..especially if we are headed towards a cashless society.

Sometimes it's like convienence is becoming more a curse than a blessing.

And if that happens, and they honestly and egregiously abuse that public trust.....and consumers suffer, the government will, and should, step in.

Funny that you mention that... I live close to one area that has a Home Depot / Sams / Wal Mart all within the same 1/4 mile radius, sharing the same street.

I live close to another area that has a Lowes / Wal Mart in the same situation.

As long as the consumer isn't mom or pop, or mom and pop's landlord, or an employee of mom and pop, or the guy who owns a restaurant next to mom and pop who loses walk-up business because mom and pop go out of business, and so on, and so on.

But they can all find minimum wage/no benefit jobs at Walmart, right?

And when Walmart succeeds in running EVERYBODY else out of business, do you really think the prices will continue to stay low?

Peta is a terrorist organization. They harass Walmart, ONLY because they are a big target. KFC, big target.
