I have a pre-order already. I'd rather them wait to launch it and have a superior system then rush it.

I don't agree with that at all.

They delayed the PS2 and it still didn't have all the features they said it would.

Considering that the system is going to cost Sony approximately 800 bucks to manufacture, I can definitely see the need for the delay (especially in regard to the on-the chip emulation system). It should be interesting to see how truly badass the Cell processor is.

# The Playstation 3 will launch in all territories in early to mid-November 2006--with a pre-Black Friday release promised. No price was given. This is a delay from the console's purported spring release in Japan but on track with the speculated launch for the United States and Europe.
# The 60GB 2.5-inch hard disc drive will have a Linux OS. It was not revealed whether the hard drive will come with the console, but one will be necessary to play PS3 games.
# Sony is preparing an online gaming service comparable to Xbox Live. It will be called PlayStation Network Platform. No price was given, but "free" is being bandied about.
# In order to meet the worldwide demand and avoid Xbox 360-esque shortages, Sony will produce 1 million PS3 consoles each month, promising 6 million by March 2007.

Limited number of consoles available before christmas and launching before black friday...And I am calling BS on making 6million units in four months, they could not do half that when the ps2 came out and they have less factories and workers now then before...

Copying X-box live.. Smart move...

But mostly the article is a bunch of maybes from sony...

Xbox could have a pretty large share by then. PS3 will need to be more and more superior to take hold the later it comes out.

Still, I think PS3 is going to own 360 technologically like Xbox owned PS2.

The big positive for 360 from this, is that the delay will give Bungie and Mirosoft more time to release Halo 3. If Halo 3 makes as big of a splash as Halo 2 did and it happens before PS3 is even out, it may be PS3's doom.

I had heard they were going to cost over $800. Very happy to hear under $500.

Right now, it costs Sony almost $900 to manufacture one unit. Unless that changes dramatically, don't plan on it being under $500. Nobody takes a 50% loss.

The PS3 may own the 360 technologically, but the significant head start the 360 has gotten will eventually be the turning point.

The XBox owned the PS2 technologically, but still undersold because of the market penetration PS2 gathered prior to the XBox release...

Ahh but they do in the video gaming industry. Consoles are almost always sold at a high loss rate and then money is later recouped through licensing and development fees with video game development companies.

It's worked this way for several generations of consoles now.

i hear they are going to do precisely that ... take a huge loss.

i also hear that the hard drive is a huge cost for them.

Apparently is suppose to be a really good one.

My take is that the high def DVD functionality will give the PS3 the edge. The target market at $500 is guys in their 20s. Same demographic who are buying HD television will also want the latest technology.
