Team Building 101: Don't Write Off 2023 Chiefs

Didn't see this podcast posted, may be worth the share:

Team Building 101: Don't Write Off 2023 Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs' front office has made some mistakes recently that have negatively impacted their play in 2023. Despite this, Joe Banner suggests the Chiefs should not be written off to repeat as Super Bowl champions and offers suggestions for future improvement.

Joe Banner is a former front office executive for the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns who was last in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons as a consultant in 2015. While in the NFL, Banner was part of an Eagles franchise that made a Super Bowl and played in four NFC Championship games.

That Patriot's team didn't league the league in drops, offensive line penalties, have massive turnovers.

Big difference-you can't shoot yourselves in the foot all the time and win in the playoffs.

It's not exactly an amazing feat to fist the worst defense in football at home or on the road.

These Chiefs on the other hand just played one of the worst defenses in football and it required 6 field goals from Butker to get enough points on the board to win.

This offense won't be fisting anyone, unless they fist themselves, which they do quite regularly.

This Joe Banner dude basically says our hopes are pinned to Andy Reid drawing up spectacular gameplans to attack the defenses we face in the playoffs.
Yeah think Smith/Taylor been an upgrade, though last several weeks of not having Smith has been a huge problem.

If he is back that could fix a lot of pass protection issues of the last several weeks.

If the Chiefs follow this simple principle they will have a chance to win every game including the bowl.

The OL is being overstated, but it is a big risk to prop Morris as the starter next season. "Throwing numbers" or draft capital at WR is a definite outcome. Signing Chris Jones at premium at his age isn't Brett's modus operandi.

That Pats team also had much stiffer competition in the playoffs than we do this year.

Required FGs to win is kind of a weird statement. They’re points and they’re the result of the Chiefs marching up and down the field. The coaches know the red zone play calling is a challenge and they’re working on it. The clear out pass to Pacheco was a preview of what they’re capable of.

Yep. Its who they are this year. Amazingly though, they still managed to win their division and secure a home playoff game. That usually doesn't happen to teams that are - double digits in the giveaway /takeaway ratio. I think for them to have a realistic chance, they're going to have cut way down on turnovers while producing more turnovers themselves.

I will be clear in stating I don't think this is a SB winning team. I have us going out in the Divisional Round, however, if you close your eyes and forget what you've seen this season, and somebody told you that an unnamed team going into the playoffs had a:

Top 10 defense

A running game that may not have the gaudy overall numbers of top rushing teams, but really just started to embrace their run game over the second part of the season and has a RB that nobody wants a part of in cold weather

A sure fire first ballot HOF head coach

And at the least the most talented QB of all time, if not already close to the best overall

You would have to feel pretty good about that team's chances against the likes of:

Lamar Jackson- huge post season failure to this point

Josh Allen- As likely to win you the game as he is to win it for his own team, and has never beaten you when it matters

Tua- Love the guy (from my home state) but bitch, please

I guess we can throw in the resurrected corpse of Joe Flacco but I think we could win that game 10-3

So, while I don't think it will happen for us this season, you can make a good case this is as strong a candidate to make it out of the AFC as anyone else.

If you lose the turnover differential in the playoffs you’re more than likely done.

Good points. But you also cannot look at the playoff failures of the past for Lamar and Josh and anticipate it’ll happen again. After tomorrow, every playoff contender is 0-0. Chiefs have a shot for sure - may the best team win!
