This. Really hate playing any team 3 times in one year.

Yeah, I don't have stats on it, but it seems like it's really hard to beat a team three times in one season. It's weird.

Sometimes. Sometimes a team just has another team's number too. I believe it was the year the Titans went to the Super Bowl. I think it was Jacksonville who was a legit Super Bowl team and they went 14-2 and lost in the playoffs and all three losses were to Tennessee.

We could lose to The Chargers Thursday and even if both teams won out from there we'd have home field. We'll have to shit it away at this point.

The Seahawks are playing well and they have the #1 rushing attack in the league, with a QB who can actually throw it. That's no gimmie.

Agreed, but losing two in a row to anyone at this, effectively doubling our loss total is still shitting it away.

Assuming the Chiefs beat the Raiders at the end of the year, we have 3 other teams to be concerned with for HFA:

Texans. I don't think we have to lose any tiebreakers to the Texans, even if we lose to SD and at Seattle (which I am pretty much counting as a loss right now, but who knows).

Concern level: very low.

Chargers. Even if we lose to SD, then win out, we still win tiebreakers with the Chargers. I'd say they're a coin flip to win at Denver at the end of the year, and even less to beat the Ravens at home the week before. And we could beat Seattle. Of course we can end this just by beating them Thursday night.

Concern level: low, but losing the division would be terrible.

Cheatriots. They could lose to the Jets and Bills but it seems pretty unlikely. It all comes down to at Steelers next weekend. I was actually rooting for the Steelers this week so they'd have some swagger going up against the Pats. But maybe fighting for their lives is better. But shit if the team that can't beat the Raiders shows up, they're never going to beat the Pats.

Concern level: medium, but at least we'd still get the other bye - and someone could definitely knock them off for us in the divisional round

We lose the strength of victory tiebreaker to Houston if we finish with the same record/AFC record.

Other than that it's cream cheese.

Right, but I'm assuming we beat the Raiders in week 17 (no repeat of 1999 please). So we win conf tiebreakers with them.

Even that would likely only come into play if we end up in a three way tie with them and New England. We're two games ahead of them in conference record. We literally have to lose to both the Chargers and Raiders with Houston winning out for a tie in conf. record, and if that happens the Chargers might pass us anyway.

Yep.

It's basically impossible.

Only team we have to worry about is the Chargers.

Pats could still win out. Pitt looks like shit.

But if we beat SD and Pats lose to Pitt next week - I think we actually clinch HFA. Yeah it seems so. ****in A those two things could easily happen.

I wouldn't say it's 100% impossible. But it seems like it's literally one scenario.

-Losing to the Chargers/Seahawks
-Pats and Houston winning out.
-Chargers losing to the Ravens.

That would knock the Chargers out and give us the division and a 3 way tie at the top.... and we'd end up the 3 seed I believe. I'm not sure how Houston would get homefield though unless we lose to the Raiders.

Yes this is correct. If we win this week and the Patriots lose we will have clinched the 1 seed. We will have the Texans beat on the conference record since they already have three conference losses and the most we could have is two if we win this week. This scenario is actually quite possible.

So if we have it clinched after this weekend, how do we play it?

I would suggest playing the starters for only a half or so against the Seahawks. That’s a team that will likely be desperate and we don’t need to expose ourselves to that. Then in the final week we play the starters long enough to ensure a victory against the Raiders.

Wondering as an unbiased observer how you see it now? I had Denver making it but I thought they'd beat the 49ers too.
