Same thing with PMD. His best is better than Jay Z in my opinion, but a pretty small body of good work.
I think Biggie is my favorite just in terms of mic skills. I don't think he's lyrically as strong as some others though.
My favorite rap act would probably be Tribe based on Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders. And of the two emcees I always preferred Phife.
My favorite album would probably be Paul's Boutique. There's hundreds of cool samples, clever lines and great songs. I once read Rakim say that he could make 5 albums from Paul's Boutique samples. You couldn't even make that album anymore with all the stuff they used, via the Dust Brothers.
one of the greatest albums of all-time, regardless of genre.

Paul's Boutique is so great, it transcends being called 'rap' or 'hip-hop'; lumping it in with all that actually sells the album short.

Paul's Boutique belongs in the conversations where people drop names like Sgt. Pepper, Physical Graffiti, and The Wall...it belongs in the discussions regarding the greatest recorded works in history.

This is like asking "what's the best beverage?"

Too many options, potential criteria, and differences in taste.

I fully admit that I know jack shit about rap, especially over the last 15+ years. Personally, I thought the most culturally important were Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, N.W.A., and Public Enemy.

It's been a long time since popular rap music had any kind of social conscience.

FWIW, my favorite verse in "Straight Outta Compton" was MC Ren's. I loved Ren for some reason.

When I wrote for the school newspaper in high school we did our own desktop publishing. Each section of the paper had its own computer. I Hamasified mine as you might expect--I used a colostomy bag as a floppy disk holder (attached to the side of the tower), my desktop wallpaper was a photo of The Rock from his Nation of Domination days, and the three computer bots that I played Hearts against during slow days were Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and MC Ren.

One day this kid walks by and asks me, "Who is Mick Ren?"

It was almost as violent as the Battle of the Kool Moe Dee Concert.

I was listening to Emperor's Soundtrack today. God, if Lupe had kept up what he was doing on his first two albums he'd be in this conversation. That song is ridiculous.

I'd say Nas if I HAD to answer, but I'd rather pass on the question all together.

By the way - is it weird that I can listen to OutKast's 'Benz or Beamer' instrumental over and over and over for like thirty mins, via MP3 loop?

One of my favorite songs with a conscience that's come out lately. It's set up in two parts, so you have to listen to the whole thing to get what he's doing (at first, seems to just be typical drug dealing bullshit). The long pause at about 2:30 is intentional and signals transition to second part.

Rappers I listen to;

Tech N9ne (and the rest of Strange Music)
Kid Cudi
Kendrick Lamar

The end.

I don't know nearly enough about rap to proclaim somebody the best.
