Warner Bros. Confirms Superman Reboot

Just a few days after this article was posted, Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov has told The Wall Street Journal that the studio is going to be reintroducing Superman. We assume this will be similar to how Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk was a reboot of Ang Lee's Hulk. Here is what the article says:

Warner Bros. also put on hold plans for another movie starring multiple superheroes -- known as "Batman vs. Superman" -- after the $215 million "Superman Returns," which had disappointing box-office returns, didn't please executives. "'Superman' didn't quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to," says Mr. Robinov. "It didn't position the character the way he needed to be positioned." "Had 'Superman' worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009," he adds. "But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all."

The article also talks about Warner Bros. adapting other DC properties over the new few years. "By 2011, Mr. Robinov plans for DC Comics to supply the material for up to two of the six to eight tent-pole films he hopes Warner Bros. will have in the pipeline by then," it says. Those projects will likely be about single characters at first, and will be darker much like The Dark Knight:

With "Batman vs. Superman" and "Justice League" stalled, Warner Bros. has quietly adopted Marvel's model of releasing a single film for each character, and then using those movies and their sequels to build up to a multicharacter film. "Along those lines, we have been developing every DC character that we own," Mr. Robinov says.

Like the recent Batman sequel -- which has become the highest-grossing film of the year thus far -- Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as "The Dark Knight." Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.

The studio is set to announce its plans for future DC movies in the next month. For now, though, it is focused on releasing four comic-book films in the next three years, including a third Batman film, a new film reintroducing Superman, and two movies focusing on other DC Comics characters. Movies featuring Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman are all in active development.

We'll let you know as soon as the studio has announced its plans for future DC movies.

I don't know... It could be outstanding. But it also could be frightening, considering how much they've ping ponged the franchise around over the years and goofed things up... I'm kinda hesitant to get very excited. I think SR had flaws, but overall it was a pretty good movie, and I think Singer would've really fired the next one up with action, alien enemies, etc.

And I thought most of the complaints were that it was too "dark" and "emo" and didn't capture the "fun" of Superman. The dark comment is probably the scariest one... I don't think anyone is sure what that means. Superman's not Batman, and it shouldn't try to be.

There is no way they can pull of a batman vs superman. It would just totally ruin the whole appeal of the new Nolan produced/written/whatever Batman's. Impossible. Christian Bale would just get pissed off and quit, and call superman a bundle of sticks or something. Kinda like how he will boycott any introduction of Robin.

Of course the sad part probably is, they could do a twisted Tim Burton Superman, and it probably would do well. Or a Michael Bay Superman, all action no character plot, and it would do really well. Although I'd definitely rather see the latter. But in reality you gotta use the first movie to set up the characters either way... then the 2nd movie you really take off and have some fun with it because you don't need to show how someone became Batman or Spiderman or whatever. That's how it works.

It wasn't that it was emo, it was due to the fact that Singer totally misrepresented the Superman Mythos with no originality or sufficient story arc. Then their is the casting issue outside of Spacey everyone sucked

So introduce Superman for a third time. Brilliant. Superman Returns was like a intro to me. Covered just enough of his history to keep people up to date. Even though, I enjoyed Batman Begins immensely, I generally really don't like hero origins. Just kick in and run with it.

The real problem about "Supes" is that while he is good for doing amazing things,he is a boring character at the end of the day.

The flaw isn't in the film-making.It's in the character.

I enjoyed Superman Returns more than i thought i would.It was loyal to what Donner and Reeves did in the original.I respected that.

Making Superman "darker" is a bad play.D.C. is setting itself up for failure IMHO.

While Marvel has done some things right,they fail more often than they succeed.Umm..anyone remember Dolph Lundgren as the Punisher?

DC needs to come to their senses.Superman represents all that we want to be.
He is a flag waver...and that is all he will ever be.Why change it now to sell more tickets?

I'd like to see a Green Lantern movie.Special effects would help a movie like that.
But,who is going to buy a ticket to that flick besides me and some fanboys?

No one.
Green Arrow,Flash etc?
I don't think so.

The current Batman films( and IMO the actual comic hero) have prospered because of two words:Frank Miller.

Miller took Batman back into the shadows.

And,that is where he belongs.

Not Superman.

If Batman is the night,Superman is the light.It's a balance.They need each other.

Batman vs. Superman?!! That would be the most stupid thing in the world. They should keep the two worlds separate. Batman is a mortal. He is grounded and does not have any super hero powers himself (which is why I prefer him to Superman). Superman, on the other hand, is endowed with naturally obnoxious speed, power, etc. If they share the same world, Batman would be but an insect for him to defeat. If they are teamed he will be at best Superman's insignificant and overshadowed sidekick. Dumb idea.

The only way I could imagine pulling off a dark superman is to do the movie from the bad guys perspective, and someone other than yet another Lex would help. I think everyone has seen that a few too many times already.

I'd like to see them explore the "evil side" of Superpeep. I just don't know what that is.

In his spare time, does he arbitrarily fly around looking for stray dogs to fling into outer space? Use his x-ray vision to watch girls shower? Blast enormous volumes of Supersplooge onto the space shuttle windshield? What?

Count me in as one of the VERY few people who really liked SR. I thought it also set up potential sequels very nicely; the "Super Kid" plot hole not withstanding.

Its a well made flick, but overall it was lacking for a Superman flick.

No one wants to watch a 2 1/2 hour Superman flick with only two action scenes.

No one wants to see a Superman movie where the last half hour he is laid up in bed and moping.

No one wants to see a Superman flick with an overall feeling of blah and dread.

Superman should be fighting big battles with supervillians like in the animated series.

Why cant Warners and DC get this property right?? They havent for almost 30 years now. They can get the animated series right but not a movie??
