Browns get rid of Lombardi; promote Ray Farmer to GM

Per Schefter's tweet. Sorry on my phone.

Good to see Cleveland fans get rid of their Pioli

The best thing Lombardi/Banner did was get rid of Richardson for a first-rounder. Their 2013 draft pretty much sucked. But the team isn't going to make any progress on the "fire everybody" principle.

I don't really get the problem with the 2013 draft. Mingo seems to be working out. Beyond that, they only had a 3rd, a 6th and a pair of 7ths, because of the Bess deal and trading into this year's, deeper, draft twice.

CLEV hiring former Chiefs VP of Player Personnel Bill Kuharich to assist new Browns GM Ray Farmer, per sources. They worked together in KC.
People around here still can't wrap their mind around the fact that it was Kuharich that managed that 2008 draft, not Herman ****ing Edwards.

Farmer, by all accounts, is highlyy respected in league circles, and his first major decision as GM probaly illustrates why that is.

Both good questions. Why Farmer and why has Kuharich been out of the league since the end of '08.

It's just a matter of time before someone took a chance on him. He's in with the other up and coming GM prospects but he has a mostly Pro scouting side of things background that I think hurt him. I thought that would keep him from getting a shot without being on the college side. He got a good amount of work in '08 as they pretty much let him run the practice squad try outs/work outs and they made a bunch of transactions. Multiple per week. And they went out and signed Studebaker and Gilberry by directly swiping them off the eagles and giants PS's.

I would say Bill K was out so long because he got tagged with the Ricky Williams trade and all those pics traded for him. That was more Ditka. Plus he has been around a long time. He was in the USFL like Carl. Just younger, think his dad was coach or scout. Plus with the Saints he was Pres and GM. You don't see those titles/structures set up like that much anymore and that aspect of it is dated. I imagine it was tough finding the right fit in a VP/Player Personnel or asst gm role. Wasn't any other Carl connections out there and most don't want to bring in an equal but an understudy.

Perfect fit with Farmer needing that college scouting background with the ability to evaluate and build a staff of scouts the way they want. Who knows how they do but it makes sense on the surface. The timing is quite odd as that owner is paying for plenty of folks not working there. At least they made a move to give the fans some hope.

I agree I think they will have a good draft. A lot of ammo like us in 08.

They probably need to look at who runs their PR dept and look there too. I think having Ted Crews on board in '12 and reporting directly to Hunt he knew it didn't matter how much they wanted to be closed off he had to have a better front man with experience to attempt to get back in good with the fans.

Kuharich has been semiretired for several years now. That doesn't seem like a guy who really has his finger on the pulse.

This move seems like they've finally decided to get serious over there, if Haslam will just sign the check and stay the hell out of their way that is.
