Apparently, 11 Royals are playing. I've given it passing glances in the past but this year, the 2nd round is partially in San Diego. We're going to be there that week and if the USA advances, I think we'll check it out

The Royals continue to do their due diligence in trying to secure a shutdown bullpen for 2017. The Royals confirmed Monday they have signed right-hander Seth Maness to a Minor League deal with an invite to Spring Training, thus adding yet one more veteran reliever to compete for a bullpen job. Maness' deal is worth $1.25 million if he makes the Majors, with $750,000 worth of performance bonuses, a source told MLB.com. The Royals already have veterans Jonathan Sanchez, Al Alburquerque, Chris Withrow, Brandon League and Bobby Parnell as non-roster Spring Training invites in camp. Maness, 28, will compete with those veterans for one, possibly two spots in the bullpen. The Royals were one of several teams to scout Maness at a recent tryout in St. Louis. Maness underwent an experimental elbow surgery instead of the traditional Tommy John surgery last August, and is expected to be ready for Opening Day. Maness had a 3.19 ERA in 244 relief outings over four seasons with the Cardinals. |

Drew Butera, from Evansville, Indiana, playing for team Italy. His parents from New York. Makes sense.

He's a steady strike thrower with a pretty good head on his shoulders. Pretty much a tailor made swing-man 10 years ago. Now that everyone has 4 guys that throw 97, he's maybe a bit out of date, but you can never go wrong with a guy that keeps the ball on the ground, minimizes extra base hits and isn't scared of the situation. Not a bad flyer and he's better than Soria if he's healthy, but that's a low bar given Soria's stuff these days.

That's a nice signing though I figured he'd be a bit out of place with Duffy and Vargas already in the rotation (both lefties, yes?).
Wood wants a chance to start so I expect he'll get at least some assurances that he'll get a few shots at it before he goes back to the 'pen. Moore's not going to get caught short on pitchers this year, is he? That's a TON of starting pitching depth, if not exactly the highest ceiling arms.

He will almost certainly get a shot in the rotation. Almost every report indicated he was looking to start again. He used to be a decent starter too. But if it doesn't work out he can certainly be effective in the pen. Dayton is definitely stretching his dollars to create depth.
