Very bland episode given the standards the show has set so far. Glad there's only 2 episodes left because I think the writers ran out of new ways to come up with interesting ideas to present the same story at this point.

Also, I always feel like a need a shower after this show ends.

I thought all the people saying he was smoking crack on other sites were funny. The flame needs to hit crack to smoke it any way efficiently. Looked more like freebase coke to me.

EDIT to add: The scene with John as King of Shit Mountain at the eczema support group was sublime.
I dunno, I kind of agree that brethren the opening and closing, the opening is a basic outlay of the case, and the closing is the Gettysburg address

he was burning it on the foil and shotgunning the smoke's aftermath. You can do it w/ resin from a pipe too - it's called 'hot knifing,' generally.

Interesting, do you feel that the advice was purposefully crafted to convince Chandra to be more utilitarian in her opening rather than more succinct?

My sense was the writers were trying to get across the sense that Chandra shouldn't bog the jury down with a Magnum Opus off the bat, only they forgot [or never bothered to learn] that the Gettysburg Address is renowned for how economically it lays out it's case.

It's a fricken 2 minute speech that fundamentally changed the nature and purpose of a nation.

I guess it depends on who you feel they are utilizing the Gettysburg address - for it's length or for it's impact.

I took it to be for impact, the Gettysburg Address is famous for it's content, not it's length. Therefore in my mind, he's saying save your best for last.

I could see that, but it's a pretty obscure and sophisticated tact to just fling off so nonchalantly, yet still present as sage advice.

Generally opening statements follow a few maxims.

1. Don't bog down
2. Don't overpromise
3. KISS

This ties in with a general speechmaking maxim throughout the proceedings of;

1. Tell them what you're going to tell them,
2. Tell them,
3. Tell them what you told them.

The tact of 'don't do too good a job up front' is not one I've run across. Seems if they were serious about it, they'd explain their rationale a little better.

I mean, logistically, opening statement is the one portion you have to most opportunity to prepare for, without having to adjust for in-proceeding developments. What if you had something in your opening statement that would have completely thwarted a line of reasoning by the prosecution, only you saved it for closing and prosecution established their line of reasoning unimpeded?

I predict the black guy is going to show up in court and turn states for the prosecution and say he smoked crack with the kid and that the kid admited to him he did it. He will rat on our hero to get out of jail (which was his plan all along).

eh, it's petering out for me. I don't forsee a satisfying conclusion, and to me it's become too disjointed. Still watching, but only to see it play out.
