PFF Examines QB Pressure Under Play - See If You Agree

Check out this article by PFF examining QB's play under pressure.

No surprise Drew Brees is listed best in a clean pocket.

They show Aaron Rodgers as best under pressure. But Brees is damn good too.

See what you think.

I'd love for someone to provide some statistical evidence to support that Alex Smith dumps balls off more than the average NFL qb.
Gochiefs probably could, but he stays kinda busy letting guys dump balls off into his mouth...

Alex Smith dumps the ball off more than Matt Cassel. Ponder this:

Given a similar environment, he probably would be. And in fact, was, for the majority of his career.

PFF exposed Cassel as a fraud before he even got here. They are MUCH more favorable towards Alex.

This was 2011. I don't know what it was for 2012, but his QB rating was significantly higher in 2012 than it was in 2011..so I imagine that it was the same or better.

2012 / when Alex was blitzed = 126.8 QBR with 8 TDs and 1 INT.

EDIT: though PFF shows that his 2011 was a 97.6 QBR.

That doesn't really mean much when you suck on third down for your entire career.

That is the most consistent thing about Alex Smith over the years.

Team stat. There were many other reasons outside of Alex as to why our 3rd down conversion rate suffered.

Believe what you want to try and lessen your QB, if that makes you feel better, though.

.
Alex did not play with the same team for every season of his career.

He was the one constant, and the 49ers constantly sucked on third down.

So much so that they had a higher third down conversion rate the year he was injured.

Guess Reid is an idiot and the Chiefs are screwed then. Guess Harbaugh was a fool to have Alex on as the 2nd highest paid 49er. Oh well. Everyone should just give up and leave the forum now. Nothing to see here, except doom and gloom.

Probably. We'll win just enough to see Alex blow it when it truly matters.

Are sacks down; TD passes up; completion percentage higher; QB yardage on the ground better; scoring production up; 3rd down conversion percentage improved; red zone productivity improved, etc.?

Here are some statistical comparisons between the two QBs.

Smith has 8 games and Kaepernick has 4 games where they were the starters and played the entire game, and although the totals are different, the percentages can be compared. The difference between the two QBs is microscopic. It seems Harbaugh’s preference is the only reason Kaepernick is playing QB now that Smith is concussion free, because all of the skills that Kaepernick is supposed to have that are better than Smith seemingly have not been converted into points and productivity.
