I've not been a soccer evangelical, going around telling people unprompted how great the sport is. I instead respond to the inevitable wave of 'how boring and gay' comments arise every time soccer is already being discussed. Usually, I try to suss out people who are actually curious about aspects of the game that puzzle them and give the best explanation and/or examples I can.

I watch all sorts of sports and many of them can be quite exciting, but a Premiere League or WC level competition is a reliable source of enjoyable watching for me. And I'm not thinking, let alone worrying, about how much anyone else enjoys it, or how cool I look enjoying myself.

It does get tiresome how often the actual facts of matter is said wave of soccer hecklers descend on a discussion, then when the soccer fans defend themselves, they start in with your line of 'oh, you think you're so cool.' No, we're just tired of not being able to discuss something we enjoy without the eternal peanut gallery that descends.

I'm thinking that, yes, throwing a touchdown pass at the highest level of the game IS more difficult than scoring a goal at the highest level of the game. Goal scoring certainly isn't "exponentially" more difficult. Think about it like this: how many individual players could accomplish each task? Last year in the NFL, only 23 quarterbacks were able to throw 15 or more touchdowns. The amount of humans who CAN play QB at the highest level is significantly smaller than the amount of humans who can score goals at the highest level. Therefore, arguably, passing TDs are more difficult.

But it is a bad comparison in the first place. A great QB can nearly always beat any defense through individual effort. Soccer is just set up so that individual dominance of a game is rarer.
