From asking around, I find a lot of people talk like their parents, even if they weren't from the same part of the country. Though I was born and lived in KC my whole life, I have a lot of southern words since my parents are from the south.

So...do people really pronounce "mary", "marry" and "merry" the same way, or some combo of them the same way?

I pronounce "aunt" correctly (in my view, anyway -- it's NOT "ant"), but I know that's unusual/regional. I had no idea that those three words above could be pronounced the same, however!!

Right. Not like it's this big significant holiday that requires an "eve" to it. Heck, it's something that sort of already happens at night. So the night before the key night is something else too? Why? WTF?

Exactly. There are people around here that send out cards, and some decorate their houses way over the top.
Just don't get it.

How would a person pronounce them differently? Their pronunciations are identical in my part of the world.

On a related note, I'm going to visit an old high school friend next month that I haven't seen in almost 25 years. We're both from Missouri, and he ended up in Louisiana. I had dinner with a mutual friend a couple of months ago. That guy had talked to him about 10 years ago and said, "You won't believe the Louisiana accent that he's picked up. It's really strong."

I'm really curious about this. I haven't lived in a place with a strongly different accent than my own, so it's hard for me to imagine that I would adopt a strong accent as an adult. Presumably it was an organic adoption as opposed to a choice, right? I'll have to ask him.

Pretty cool test, you spend 5+ min on it and then it gives you an error message without telling you the result. That is awesome. I'm glad I did this.

I'm pretty sure the standard generic way to say MARY MARRY and MERRY all sound the same. In fact, I have no idea what other way you would pronounce them. Even if I try to differentiate MARY from MERRY, they all sound the exact same to me. You just talk weird heh

The area I grew up (Western Iowa) most closely resembles the "general american accent" and accents from that area are routinely copied by newscasters and those in media as to have the most generally accepted form of speech. Because newscasters aren't supposed to sound like they are from anywhere

But, most from the coasts seem to think people in Iowa and Kansas speak in more of a southern or northern accent than they actually do. Although I do notice some people in Kansas City that have a small southern twang. Whenever I'm away from home, and people ask me where I'm from, I ask them to guess based on my accent. They usually are surprised that I'm from Iowa or Kansas and expect me to sound more like a hillbilly or something. To me, if you draw a line from Western Texas diagonally up just west of Chicago, speech seems to be more generalized when you start to go West.

Per wikipedia, the area of which the local accent is most similar to general american as a whole is:
