Movies and TV Need advice on cutting cable cost. - Page 23

My last bill from Att was $215...sick of paying that much to watch only a few shows. I dont want to cut the cord from cable entirely. I would like to keep basic cable and internet, but still be able to watch the shows I like on HBO and showtime. I`m already a netflix subscriber, any other suggestions ? Can you buy season passes for most of the shows on HBO and Showtime?

Now this is pretty interesting. Dish Network is soon going to offer a service called Sling. You can get it through an app on Roku, Amazon Fire, etc. Right now they're only taking beta testers.

For $20 a month, you'll be able to get 12 channels, including ESPN, ESPN 2, TNT, TBS, CNN, Food Network, Disney, Travel, and more. That's huge. They are going to be the first internet streaming service to include ESPN.

We havnt discussed Sling TV on here before?

The one think I have against it is it appears that they are limiting it to one viewing per login at a time. So those cable cutters with families are going to have a bad time.

Just gotta figure out Royals games before Spring and I'm good. We just don't watch much TV.

This is huge that it's coming to Netflix instead of cable. Hopefully more go this route.

I use to use Playon a lot. **** them. It was $30 lifetime subscriptions. The plugin constantly did not work and needed to be updated daily because Hulu and Netflix would do their best to disable it. Then Playon decided to move the goal posts. "Oh that lifetime sub you bought? Just kidding, we are going to monthly payments, so pay more."

By then, icefilms was starting to take off on XBMC. I will never recommend or give a dime to Playon.

Amazon Fire TV, but lots of people love those chinese imported boxes. I dont understand why.

Are they rootable again? Last I herd the last batched could not be rooted.

Since I can never get the XBMChub Addon Installer to work properly (it always just shows empty directories whenever I do a search or browse through categories), I've turned to a similar addon called Total Installer. It's working great so far. UI is a little amateurish, but functionality is solid.

They no longer are, but if you are looking to use SlingTV, Netflix, Hulu, and XBMC then you do not need to root it.

Alright, so I'm deciding between Fire TV (on sale for 84 bucks right now), Nexus Player, and Minix Neo. Along with the traditional app support (Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, YouTube, Songza, etc.), equally important is access to XBMC and the ability to web surf and play videos/streaming links via a web browser, ideally Chrome.

What do you guys think?
