Alex Smith touted as the right fit for Andy Reid’s system

Alex Smith touted as the right fit for Andy Reid’s system

Posted by Mike Florio on March 31, 2013, 10:49 PM EDT

APAs West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith prepares to visit the Chiefs with hope that the team holding the first overall pick is “legitimately interested” in him, the local newspaper has made the case in extensive fashion for Alex Smith being the right fit for new coach Andy Reid’s system.

Extensively quoting Trent Dilfer and Herm Edwards of ESPN, Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star explains that Alex Smith is the answer, reasoning that the trade for the first overall pick in the 2005 draft means that the Chiefs “obviously felt more strongly” about Alex Smith than Geno Smith.

So why are the Chiefs reportedly “fascinated” with Geno Smith if Alex Smith is the answer? The preference for Alex Smith makes any flirtation with Geno Smith an obvious effort to entice someone else to trade up to the top spot in the draft, allowing the Chiefs to slide back a few spots, perhaps getting the same guy they would have taken at No. 1 and definitely acquiring other picks that can help the Chiefs improve quickly.

Improving quickly provides the Chiefs the biggest reason to not take Geno Smith. With this year’s second-round pick and next year’s third-round (and possibly second-round) selection already devoted to the Alex Smith trade, the Chiefs need to use this year’s first-round pick on a player who will help them get better now, not later.

In today’s NFL, coaches rarely have the luxury to wait until later to make a team better.

This flies directly into the face of what Dorsey has said.

He's stated over and over that he wants to go BPA even if there's a solid starter there already. This means he might take Joeckel even if we have albert. I'd assume if we felt Milliner was the top talent we'd take him despite signing two CB's already.

I would assume that applies as much to QB as any other position...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

It is very apparent Geno isn't BPA. Basically any team that takes him in the top 10 imo is doing so out of desperation but I know that train of thought doesn't fly on here.

Just wondering who they think is the BPA. In theory, by trading down you no longer get the BPA. At the moment we can take the BPA in the draft. If a trade happens then we get the BPA at the time of that selection.

Nothing to see here.........just stating the obvious.

not really-not if you have, say five or six players all rated roughly equally. I think the big problem with this year's draft is that this is the case; there is no superstar, but the top ten guys or so all look like solid picks. So if you could trade down and pick up a #3 or a #2, you'd be doing well.

This is true. Then it becomes a matter of what postiion you desire to fill the most if there are several players rated the same or similar at different positions.
