Would you trade J. Charles for a 2nd?

I'm listening to Cowherd earlier today and he was talking about the belief of many that "running backs are a dime a dozen." He disagreed with the saying, and said if that was the case why doesn't everyone have a Lynch or Murray or Peterson, etc.

So, it got me thinking. I've seen a lot of people on CP talk about the devaluation of RB and how you should never use a first rounder on one. With that in mind, if HB's are a dime a dozen and can be found mid-rounds, would you trade Charles for a 2nd round pick to get an player at an "impact" position and then try to replace him with a mid-round draft pick?

This is just such an easy decision for me. I agree with Milkman that while you generally don't want to cut ties late, that doesn't apply as completely for someone of Charles' caliber. To trade him is basically conceding the next two years. No chance we replace his production. I'm not an Alex fan, but that is too much. If we didn't absolutely kill that second round pick, the trade would be a total disaster.

Running back isn't a hard position to find decent replacements... most running backs aren't worth a 2nd.

But Charles isn't most running backs. He's probably the best back of his time. He's one of the few that I would have a hard time trading for anything but a blow-you-away type of deal

I believe running backs are a dime-a-doze. But Charles is literally the face of the offense. Your fanbase would mutiny. Plus, if you trade him, you are sending a sure-fire hall of fame player into the hall under another teams name. Then you factor in that his contract is so team-friendly that you can literally cut him whenever. All of that has real value that far exceeds a second round pick.

Yea, in theory it sounds like a good deal. The reality is that most 2nd rounders dont turn out to be stars. Most of them are solid contributors, but not a star.

The fact that you could land a multi-probowl player for essentially 2 years of running back play is a proposition that - while painful - is an absolute must for me.

However, I think that Charles has been such a good soldier that it sends a HORRIBLE message from a franchise currently in a contract dispute with their best player. We've come a long way from being the Cheaps. You have to continue to foster an environment where players want to be.

Having said that, from a pure business standpoint, you would absolutely have to do that, especially if it's in the top of the second.
This is why you don't do it. You simply can't send that message to the roster at this stage of the game. You can't act like the Pats until you perform like they do. Otherwise, yeah. It'd be a bargain, as long as you don't miss.

This, exactly. The Patriots can do shit like this. The Chiefs best shot at winning a playoff game for the next few years is Jamaal.

This.

Next year, even with a big Houston contract, we'll have money to spend on the 1 or 2 key FA's to put us over the top...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

No.

I do believe you can find great backs in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, sometimes later. That said, I'm not trading one of the best in the NFL for a 2nd round pick with no real talent behind him. And don't give me the bullshit that Davis is a legitimate starting caliber RB in the NFL.

trade your absolute best player when you are seriously a possible contending team.

Anyone who said yes needs to go check into rehab tonight.
