The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

It's funny because when people go to predict what the Chiefs are going to do they cherry pick either Reid or Dorsey to fit their argument. I honestly believe them when they say they will work together and the final say will be Dorsey's. Most people in the media don't seem to even know Dorsey exists.

Yes however I believe the next qb of the Chiefs will be Reids choice. He has had great success with qbs.

If that scenario happens. Reid and Dorsey truly care about building a championship team and care about wiining. A Smith would be a great backup to Geno.

Well you can argue exactly how much input he had in GB, but Dorsey's Packers had a ton of success with QBs as well.

It comes down to Geno or Foles. I don't buy any of this Alex Smith BS it makes no sense to me that Reid would even be interested

I think it will be Geno only if B Albert resigns.

Yeah, I'm sure that Alex Smith just can't wait to be a backup QB in Kansas City.

Why would Reid not want someone who has mastered the WCO like Smith?

Well I don't think they will get Smith and take a QB at 1.1. Then again, would Alex be happy if we took a QB at 2.2? Maybe Dorsey just won't care whether Alex is happy or not. I would hope that the Chiefs are at least going to get a QB in the first 3 rounds(assuming they don't piss a 3rd away on Alex). If that's their plan I hope Alex makes a stink about being the clear-cut starter during all of this. That or demands a new contract.

Buzz is he's demanding a new deal which makes it even more difficult to believe that KC is seriously interested in him. Especially after the Cassel debacle

Stanzi?

Yeah. I mean for me I just take my chances on Geno. But from their perspective, if they really really don't like G. Smith, that's tough. You can go into the draft and hope you get a guy at 2.2 or maybe get stuck trading up. I don't hate Foles as much as some, so if I had to go outside I might try him. All depends on what the price is though. At least he hasn't reached his ceiling IMO. I am not saying it's going to be a high ceiling but if the other options are Alex Smith or Flynn I would go Foles. I mean Andy and our OC did work with him. I don't want to go down the Flynn path, and his contract is pretty big as well isn't it?

Under the premise that they aren't taking a guy at 1.1, it becomes a tough call. Like I said I would try to get a guy with the second pick or move up. Problem is if you are going with that strategy you are taking a risk because you enter the draft without a QB. Because of that risk, I think if they do enter the draft without Foles or Alex Smith, I don't see how they don't take Geno. Or at least trade down and take a QB then. I just don't see them going into the draft without a QB and then passing on one in the first round. That's a pretty big gamble. If there is a run on QBs are stuck paying a price to jump up and grab one.

IMO, 2013 is beyond weird.

I get that people, at this point, haven't been able to peg Barkley. Great junior year, average senior year, all the intangibles and size but the arm is questionable, so I get it. You don't want to double down this early in the process. He may wow in late March. Actually, I hope he does so at least there's some reference point.

But the Smith case is weird, if not odd. Great leader, high completion passer, measured out well, spoke well, years of game film. He seems to have everything scouts look for in a rookie QB, if not far more.

So what's the real deal? I refuse to believe its skin color. So what is it?
