Goodell enforcing more stupid rules to make the game less fun

Didn't see this posted anywhere, and if so **** it. This deserves its own thread.

No dancing, salutes or spinning ball: NFL cracks down on celebrating
By Will Brinson | NFL Writer
August 6, 2013 1:39 pm ET

The NFL is cracking down on ball-spinning celebrations in 2013. (USATSI)
Steve Smith hasn't really lost a step at the age of 34 -- and he'll tell you as much -- but he might have to figure out a new celebration this season. That's because the NFL will apparently emphasize cracking down against spinning the ball and a number of other player celebrations.

Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk first pieced together the fact that multiple officials around the league are informing players that spinning the ball in celebration next year could result in a 15-yard penalty.

It's not necessarily a new rule per se, however: "throwing or shoving the ball" already fell under unsportsmanlike penalties in 2012.

Additionally, an NFL spokesperson told Deadspin.com that the league doesn't intend to penalize players who spin the ball in celebration after a touchdown, only on the actual field of play.

Unfortunately for a player like the Panthers' Smith, it's kind of his signature move. He said he'd be willing to make a change or "alter' his spin to comply with the rules however.

“We're working it out,” said Smith said when asked about how he'd handle the change.

There will be LOTS of outrage over the NFL cracking down on players engaging in these sorts of celebrationsl. Some of it is justified: spinning the ball is a cool celebration, requires some skill and is relatively harmless. Spinning the ball -- or spiking it, throwing it, shoving it and pointing it -- is not like making a throat-slashing gesture, which seems forbidden for good reason.

But as long as the league is fine with players spinning after a touchdown, I've got no problem with this, frankly. We don't need someone spinning the ball every single time they pick up a first down. Save the celebrations for the end zone.

Ya.

Some of those bans I understand like verbal taunting, standing over a player, and anything to do with throwing the ball but the rest of it is just stupid.

Can't point on a first down, can't celebrate sacking a QB, can't do a military salute??? WTF!?

Guys, if you're that angry, just go to NFL.com and fire off a quick note, the push to stop this nonsense has to start somewhere, why not here with the most passionate, knowledgable fans in the game?

I promise, i'm going to... i honestly cant STAND this guy anymore.

Does Goodell not realize that TV ratings determine the profit margin for the FL with the next TV contract? The NFL SHOULD be more than "just a game", and the celebrations on the field are just icing on the cake. How boring would it have been if Neil Smith sacked the QB, then just stood up and walked back across the line of scrimmage? Hell no... His home run swing livened up the crowd as well as people in my living room. Jared Allen's signature calf roping move was just as cool and received a positive reaction from all the people around me.

STOP ****ing with my entertainment Mr. Goodell and lave my game alone. Let defenses PLAY defense. Make opposing QB's fear defenses like the Chiefs of the mid 90's.Make Arrowhead LOUD again and people would be more willing to pay your ridiculous ticket prices and parking fees.

I'd keep doing it if I were the players. Let's see if Goodell likes 7-10 point games.

Thats really not a bad idea, can he reeeally fine every single player?

What we need is a league-wide Jim McMahon style Rozell headband moment... seriously, this has gone too far.

I ****ing hate this rule. Nothing better than creating a potentially game-changing penalty based on a rule where the refs have to make an opinion every time they enforce the rule. That's unfair to put that burden on refs.

I don't want a team to lose a game because a guy celebrated just a little too much for the ref's liking. Where do you draw the line? This rule has nothing to do with football. Fine the guys if it bothers the league. Don't impact the result of the game for this BS.
