i defended a few FROM bullies but i was rarely bothered myself. Although in high school i had a few guys that looked for a way to get me beat up.

There was one exception with a bully that was three grades ahead of me who always gave me a hard time. He was huge and I knew he would kick my butt if I took him on and he took full advantge of it. I built up a lot of resentment during that time period and never forgot it. Several years later, I ran into the guy at a bar one night. Much to my surprise, he started in like we were in grade school again wit his degrading putdowns.

Ooops, the only thing bigger than me about him now was his mouth and as a bonus, I was three years into martial arts by that point in time. He was sitting on a bar stool running his mouth and I gave him one shot to close it, but he kept it up. He said "go ahead and take your best shot pussy." I took one step back and gave him a roundhouse kick to the head, and laid him out cold next to his bar stool. When he came to he called me outside (short bus) and I beat the living chit out of him. The dude looked like he got him by a train and never laid a hand on me. I never had any trouble with him again.

Never was picked on or picked on anybody, I was pretty much a small kid. Being friends with everybody helps, of course. As does having only 30 kids in your class for the whole school career - makes everything much more personal (grew up in Europe, different system). I did fight on the streets, though, the last fight being in the 5th grade (obviously nothing beyond a bloody nose). I'm a very peaceful person.

There are only about three people in the world that I actively hate, and Mac Cowan is one of them. I moved right before I started 7th grade, and didn't know anyone at my new school, and he chose me as one of his bullying projects. He had a little group of mouth-breathing camp followers, and he never picked on me unless he had them for backup. Biggest coward in the world. Of course, he stopped bothering me once I finally found a peer group of friends and wasn't alone any more.

I found out a few years ago that he still lives in town and works for his dad for minimum wage. That's about what I expected of him.

Other than him and his lemmings, I never had trouble with bullies other than just the random beatings that typically happen to teenage boys. In fact, I was kind of pals with several kids who were typically labeled as bullies. I just wish I had met them a couple of years earlier, because a couple of them were a heck of a lot tougher than Mac.

Reminds me of that scene in "Broadcast News" when the young Albert Brooks character tells the bullies beating him up, "You'll never make more than $19,000 a year!"

Around the time when I was a freshmen/sophmore I had a bit of trouble as well. Several of the Seniors would pack up and try to pick on me - 'course I was pretty small at the time - didn't really grow until my Sr year. Fast forward to the year I graduated. Was working for the owner of some apartments. He was having carports built. We were doing the gravel work while a contracting crew was putting the roof on the carports. One of the guys up on the roof was the ringleader back when I was in HS. I noticed shingles kept flying down around me throughout the day. Well, that afternoon they were sitting around their truck talking when I came out of an apartment and put my tools in the truck next to them. I walked up to the guy and shared a few choice words (at this time I am 6'1", 210 lbs and no fat, he's still 5'9" 170ish lbs, oh, and I wasn't a Christian yet either). As he looked up to me the look on his face was priceless and he just about wet himself. He worked for the rest of the week and was quite respectful.

That's terrible. I'm sorry you had to live through that. But, I liked how it all ended up for you....Good story

I moved around alot when I was a kid, and was frequently the new kid in school or the neighborhood. I got fucked with a lot. Finally I moved to a new town between my sophomore and junior years and decided I'd had enough. After that, people who tried to pick on me got their asses kicked.

Bullies should be beat down early and often. The longer you wait, the worse it gets.

I'd be curious to hear from some of the folks that admit to being bullies. Why did you do it? Do you still do it? How do you feel about it now? Are you still living in your hometown working some pathetic hourly job while those of us that were picked on go on to do great things (because that's how it is in my head, anyway. )?
