Any of you done the genetic mapping?
I just sent in my packet for 23andme.com with the saliva/cheek cell sample for genetic mapping. I have several patients that have done it and turned me on to it.

It actually showed a propensity for periodontal disease and certain types of cancer and brain issues/diseases.

I think it is similar to what Angelina Jolie used perhaps. Anyhow, have any of you guys done this? Did it confirm where you thought you were from? History of familial disease? Markers for any diseases?

I can't wait to get mine back.

I did it for my dog (my wife wanted it for Christmas). They couldn't determine what breed she was.

What a waste of $70.

I guess I'd like to know if I'm prone to Alzheimers so that I can take out long term care insurance. Things like that. Plus, I guess it can pinpoint an exact location your genome developed on earth. I'm German, I know that, but I'm hoping to find some Viking badass in there as well.

My father had Alzeimers and my Grandmother on my Mom's side of the family had it to. I am doomed.

not necessarily. what genetics and epigenetics has taught us is that none of us are doomed to a certain fate. bad health runs in my family, but I'm in much better shape than everybody in my family. should I go freak out and buy life insurance? absolutely not. nothing is written in stone.

unless you have huntington's or a nonsense mutation in one of the BRCA genes. then, yeah... you're screwed.

Apolipoprotein E has a very strong association with alzheimer's. Don't know if that's part of an accessible genetic panel, but having two APOE4 alleles greatly increases the risk of late-onset Alzheimer's disease. People with one APOE3 and one APOE4 allele are at increased risk compared to people with two APOE3 alleles (the most common genotype). People with at least one APOE2 allele are at decreased risk of getting late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

The whole genetic causal basis for alzheimer's and many other disorders hasn't really been hashed out, so these tests aren't really helpful outside of facilitating anxious thoughts about said disorders.

tl;dr Just live your life and forget about these genetic panels until we have better causal evidence for many of these disorders.

It would be kind of useful to know whether I'm prone to Alzheimers. But I'd buy a shotgun rather than LTC insurance so I could make my death look like an unfortunate hunting accident.
