That's what Ive been saying.
Everyone is bitching and moaning that our receivers get no separtion, but how the hell does anyone expect them to get any separtion when everything is packed within 10-15 yards of the LOS? If Cassel can begin to simply hit some passes even 20 yards downfield, it would open some things up underneath, which would make McCluster the weapon people have envisioned.

while i realize what the real impetus behind this thread is ... you think if the playbook is opened up that Cassel will explode in a extraordinary fashion and force the Chiefs to move on.
Not a bad idea, i guess. Cassel does seem to perform better in the hurry-up offense so i think the chiefs should start the game in a hurry-up and hopefully get Cassel in a rhythm.

It doesn't matter Cassel isn't a competent starting QB, he'll **** it up in some way.

I'm still not sure the playbook being closed is more situational than Cassel. They had a two score lead in the rain against San Diego and then played the Browns. I don't imagine they'll try to play like that against Indy or Houston. Although who knows.

He won't be able to color it as well if it's closed, but I don't imagine he could stay in the lines very well anyway.

At some point this year, we're going to have to open it up and see what Matt can do.

What good would it do to "open the playbook" as you say, when the QB can't complete the passes you're opening up? Don't you think that if we could pass it 30-40 yards with any consistency at all, that they would be doing it?
What would be the point of forcing long passes when the odds of Cassel getting it within 5 yards are slim to none? That's an easy way to ensure a quick 3 and out without running any time off the clock. Then the D has to go back out, causing them to be dog tired by the 4th quarter and putting even more pressure on the offense. Everybody is so desperate to find a solution that people are now partially blaming Weis, saying he's holding us back. But Weis is only custom tailoring the offense around what he knows the QB is capable of. Believe it or not, offensive coordinators like to score points. Lots of them. They don't play ultra conservative just for the fun of it. Weis is calling the plays he knows we have a good chance of executing. He's not going to start asking Cassel to chuck bombs with the mindset of "If Cassel ****s up, then let him **** up." Not never, not nohow. That doesn't play to Cassel's strengths, and he knows that better than you or I. Despite the offensive production, I think Weis is doing a decent job getting the most out of what he has to work with. The offensive mistakes for the most part haven't been because of poor offensive game planning or outright stupid playcalling or clock management. They've mostly been mistakes in execution, like an INT from a tipped ball, or Cassel simply missing the target. There's certainly things we'd all like to see change. But asking Cassel to do way more than he's capable of would be a mistake. And I say that while hating him more than Hitler/Mussolini/Pol Pot/Stalin/and Ivan IV combined.

Fish Cassel sucks, but he doesn't suck this bad. All these WRs at the line of scrimmage aren't doing him any favors. I'd rather all the WRs be split up where they can get YAC.
