Does Alex Smith deserve a extension after this season?

Does he deserve a extension to be our QB long term or do we take a chance on somebody else.

A contract at $9-12 M/year probably only allows us to keep the status quo. And I'd rather take my chances elsewhere than settle for a few years of feel good football without a real chance for a Superbowl.

I'd feel better at $8 M per year, which is where he's at now. No one thinks we are going to win the SB this year, so that means we still need to add talent to this team if we are building toward a championship. Alex only makes sense if he is cheap enough that we can keep elite talent on both sides of the ball around him.
If the cap increases as expected, Smith at 9-12 million/yr is cheap enough to keep elite talent on both sides of the ball around him.

That's really my point - nobody thinks Smith is an elite guy; a guy that makes all his teammates better. But I think we've established that he can win and win big with a good team. If he's making 'game manager' money, then it makes sense to keep him because we can surround him with that good team.

And for the record, but/for the fact that Peyton Manning is a !@#$ing quarterbacking robot, I would absolutely believe that this team can win a Super Bowl, or at least get to one.

So let's say we extend Smith for 4 years/$40 million - in 2 years, Manning's gone and this team has a clear path to the AFCW.

"take my chances elsewhere...."

With what? Who? You want to let the guy leave after 2014 and spin the wheel on Bray?

I think Chiefs fans suddenly got really spoiled by a competent quarterback and just assume everyone has one. Folks - 1/2 the NFL is woefully inadequate at the QB position. I have no interest in re-joining those ranks.

We can win with Smith. We don't have a clear replacement for him. Go ahead and keep looking for young ones, but if you give Smith an extension that takes him through 2016/2017, you have plenty of time to find that young one without falling back into the abyss of shit we were just in.

Smith plays a role in how great our defense is.. Just like he did for the 49ers. No reason to let him go unless we have an elite QB to replace him with.

On the slim chance he wins a playoff game he's the most successful QB the Chiefs have had since Montana.

Relatively, that means he's the second most valuable to the franchise but roster moves have to be determined in a vacuum..

That being said his value must be considered in comparison to the division. Denver will be the same team if not weaker than KC once Peyton retires and Osweiler proves to be a bust. San Diego is equal or greater than KC as long as Rivers plays at his current level and they improve their defense. Oakland is on par with KC once they get consistent quarterback play and shore up their roster with draft picks and quality free agents.

Alex staying on at QB makes sense if the team can improve beyond their current level or if the other teams deteriorate during his contact.

In two minds about this. I was real down on Smith early in the season, even when we were unbeaten, then the O-line gets it's shit together and he looks above average even with shitty receivers. I will reserve judgement until the play-offs I think - if he shits the bed then we need to find a new QB pretty quick!

Smith's probably looking at 3600 passing, 400 rushing, and 25 total touchdowns with 8 INTs. He's gotten better as the season has progressed in year one of a new system with really horrific WRs outside of Bowe around him.

Yet, some of you still want to ride him out of here. I'm all for drafting a young QB too, but Alex has earned the chance to be a potential long-term solution here.

3 straight years of consistently good football, but some of you would rather be proven right about your opinion of him than actually see him stay here for a while.

Agree.

I think with Dorsey as GM we will keep adding to the roster at all positions, hopefully he can find another Rodgers to groom...
