Greinke Brawls..breaks collarbone

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...pitch/2076525/

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the game Thursday night against the San Diego Padres, but their pennant hopes certainly took a hit.

Dodgers starter Zack Greinke fractured his left collarbone in a bench-clearing brawl during the Dodgers' 3-2 victory over the Padres at Petco Park, prompting enraged Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp to confront Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin in the clubhouse tunnel after the game.

Padres starter Clayton Richard and security guards intervened before another fight ensued.

The brawl started when Quentin was hit in the shoulder by Greinke's pitch in the sixth inning. He took several steps towards the mound with his bat, dropped it, and charged Greinke. It was the second time in four years that Greinke hit Quentin, but Quentin was intercepted by Kansas City Royals catcher Miguel Olivo and home-plate umpire Bill Hohn back on April 9, 2009, when Greinke pitched for the Royals and Quentin played for the Chicago White Sox.

This time, no one held anyone back, with Greinke, Kemp and Jerry Hairston ejected from the Dodgers, along with Quentin.

The biggest losers, of course, were the Dodgers, with Greinke sidelined for an indefinite period. He's scheduled to see Los Angles physician Neal ElAttrache on Friday. Greinke signed a six-year, $147 million free-agent contract during the winter.

"My teammate now has a broken f------ collarbone,'' Hairston told reporters. "Excuse my language, but that's unbelievable.''

Said Quentin: "It's unfortunate. It could have been avoided. You can ask Zack about that.

"For me, I've been hit by many pitches in my career. I think you guys know that. I can tell you I've never responded in that fashion, so you guys can do your homework on that. For me, the situation is done. That's it.''

Quentin was most infuriated, he told reporters, by what Greinke told him after he was hit.

"That was the final straw,'' he said.

Kemp, enraged by the incident, met face to face with Quentin in the hallway after the game at Petco Park. He followed Quentin into the parking lot and saying: "We'll see, b----,'' according to the Los Angeles Times.

"That's terrible for him to charge the mound like that,'' Kemp told reporters. "I think Carlos Quentin went to Stanford. I heard there's some smart people at Stanford. That wasn't too smart.''

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that Quentin shouldn't be permitted to play another game until Greinke can pitch.

"We're in a 2-1 game and on a 3-2 pitch to a guy that I see on the [score]board set a record for the Padres by getting hit, a guy who basically dives into the plate,'' Mattingly said, according to the MLB.com report. "In a 2-1 game, we're trying to hit him, 3-2?

"It's just stupid is what it is. He should not play a game until Greinke can pitch. If he plays before Greinke pitches, something is wrong.''

Said Greinke: "The only thing I'm going to say about the whole thing that happened there is I've never hit him on purpose. I never thought of hitting him on purpose.''

Quentin has long been a magnet for pitches. In 2004, he set a minor league record by getting plunked 43 times, and he led the major leagues the past two seasons, getting hit 23 times in 2011 and 17 times last year, even though he played just 86 games.

Greinke told reporters he thought Quentin's umbrage in reacting to getting hit by pitches was "a ploy" to intimidate pitchers.

"I figured he was trying to intimidate pitchers so they wouldn't throw inside,' he said.

The Dodgers and Padres play again Monday, this time, in Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium on Jackie Robinson Day.

The CB may have cracked, but Zach proved to be a bad mother ****er in that exchange. He didn't go Nolan Ryan or Farnsworth, but he didn't back down one bit where a lot of pitchers would have. Props to Zach.
Great points, he kicked ass, just don't ask his CB it might disagree! I think MMA fighters, perhaps even the military, will seek Zach's combat prowess for future engagements with hostile opponents. He can help them perfect their "duck and let your CB take the brunt of the impact" technique - it's all the rage in special forces classes the world over I hear. OK, that was mean....sorry!

Perhaps Zach's Mom should sign him up for some self-defense classes while he's home. Lord knows it can't hurt. Or, Zach might get it done faster by attending a rape prevention class with all the girls from his sorority. Don't get mad, I'm just trying to help.... Here's a thought, can a pitcher carry a can of mace on the mound? (Just an idea....)

One last thought........where the **** was the catcher and his $500 worth of gear and badass legs? Go back and watch, he failed Zach! This isn't Pinto-8 (!!!!), you never let the batter get to your pitcher!

How about pitchers carrying tasers?

It's not just that. When a pitcher is afraid to throw inside because he thinks he'll hit a batter, then he'll throw more pitches to the outside. It makes your pitch placements more predictable. Plus outside pitches tend to be power hitters' sweet spot.

Personally, I think it's bullshit that batters should be allowed to wear elbow armor. They shouldn't feel courageous to hover over the plate. If you look at where Quentin's upper body was when he got hit, there isn't much room at all for error for Greinke to miss on an inside pitch. That's wrong and that's not baseball.

Per baseball official rule 6.08(b), a batter becomes a baserunner and is awarded first base when he or his equipment (except for his bat):
is touched by a pitched ball outside of the strike zone,
and he attempts to avoid it (or had no opportunity to avoid it),
and he did not swing at the pitch.[1]

subjective now by the umpire. Fair enough but it is not enforced for obvious reasons.

Ever face a 90 plus fastball headed at your torso that was so inside that you couldn't even twist away from it only to hit your shoulder or back ? I have and I was very agile back in the day. Now a lot you say this pitch was not that far inside. I totally disagree because first Quentin was not crowding the plate with his stance being in the middle of the box and facing a 90 plus fastball aimed at your torso with a normal stance that you do not expect to be thrown at you because of the game situation(this is key) allows for more of a chance to be hit. This IMO was why Quentin got so pissed and charged. Yeah they don't like each other and there is a history BUT I really think because of the game situation Quentin assumed Greinke wouldn't try to bean him and why Quentin charged because he took it personal and caught him off guard. Quentin's thinking during the pitch and after being hit is "This MOFO even comes after me when it means potentially losing the game". Game ON !!!

Yep.

There's a reason Quentin led the majors in being hit by a pitch last year while playing in roughly half of the available games. He's chosen to make the option of getting hit by a pitch part of his game.

Quentin is absolutely crowding the plate. That doesn't mean he's on top of the plate. It means that he is so far inside that any pitch that misses inside is going to plunk him. Barry Bonds used to do the same shit.

Stop letting these guys wear elbow armor.

Maybe, but he would not have done this against guys like Gibson,Drysdale,Koufax back in the day.

C'mon man. Crowding the plate doesn't necessarily mean your stance is right on the edge of the batters box. CQ leans out over the plate. His arms and shoulders are consistently outside the box and they get even further over the plate when he loads his swing. There is a reason he is hit more than any other player in baseball.

The rule dealing with the batter having to make an attempt to get out of the way has been enforced in the past. CQ avoids it by turning his shoulder in towards home plate and taking the pitch off of the armor he is allowed to wear.

Quentin charged the mound because he couldn't believe anyone would dare to pitch him inside on a full count. He took a couple steps toward the mound glaring at Zach like a ****ing reerun and when Greinke said something he couldn't believe that a skinny pitcher would dare to challenge his douchebagedness. This whole incident is his fault and he shouldn't be able to play until Greinke is healthy.

How can you have played baseball long enough to see a 90mph fastball and not know about a rule that states that the batter must make an attempt to avoid being hit by a ball to be awarded first base?

Smells like bullshit.
