Pretty alarmist, IMO, but possible.

The strike is constricting gasoline supplies which is why the price has climbed despite oil being flat.

Once the strike is over then you'll see them drop as long as oil stays down.

I'll have to go do some more research when I get home this evening but I don't know that the strike by the steelworkers at the refineries is having much impact. I read last week that the refining was not impacted as it is not the refinery workers themselves that are striking, it is the steelworkers who do maintenance and upkeep.

I may be completely wrong on this but will check later.

Shell is the industry representative during the negotiations with the steelworkers union.

The union has stated it is on strike because of safety concerns for its members and the community, but Shell has said otherwise. The oil and gas company said that the major sticking point was the union's demand that Shell replace routine maintenance contractors with union-backed employees.

Strikes are ongoing at 15 plants around the country, five of which are in Houston. Twelve of the 15 plants are refineries that represent 20 percent of U.S. production. Earlier this week, workers walked out of the largest U.S. refinery, the Motiva Enterprise refinery in Port Arthur.

Houston-area steelworkers have been on strike since Feb. 1, when workers walked out of LyondellBasell Industries (NYSE: LYB) in Houston, Marathon Petroleum Corp. (NYSE: MPC) Galveston Bay Refinery in Texas City, Shell Oil Co. Deer Park Refinery, Shell Deer Park Chemical Plant and Marathon Petroleum Houston Green Cogeneration facility in Texas City after midnight.

The union represents 30,000 workers nationwide, 5,000 of which are in the Houston area.

Texas is a right-to-work state, which means individuals are not required to join labor unions.

That's logical. I'm really not complaining loudly. 2.25 is better than I'd been conditioned to expect.

Morse has suggested oil could fall all the way to $20 a barrel from the current $50.

Other analysts agree that crude is poised to fall sharply — if not all the way to $20 — because it continues to flood into storage for a number of reasons:

— Oil investors are making money buying and storing oil because of the difference between the current price of oil and the price for delivery in far-off months. An investor can buy oil at $50 today and enter into a contract to sell it for $59 in December, locking in a profit even after paying for storage during those months. Also, drillers are cutting back fast because oil prices have plummeted from $107 a barrel in June. And demand is showing signs of rising.

But many analysts believe oil prices will fall through the spring, before summer drivers start to relieve the glut.[/I]

I have about $15K to invest. Can I buy crude oil? I'd like to buy at $20/barrel.

You would need to take physical delivery meaning you would need to make arrangements with a storage company and pay their monthly fees.

Best bet would be to find a stock, ETF, or long term options on futures

Running them? Not totally, but I'd suggest you take a look at USW again if you think they don't have an oil component. These guys aren't hanging steel for skyscrapers...

I was going to stop and fill up on the way home today. The station I normally stop at was $2.29 and was packed. I didn't feel like waiting so I went to the station closer to my home. After I started filling up, I noticed that it was $2.62 at that station! WTF? The stations are usually all in lock step here.

Interesting, it has been at 2.29 for several days here too. My usual fill spot was down to 2.25 this morning and then 2.23 tonight.
