Weeden signs with Cowboys

Brandon Weeden signs two-year deal with Cowboys

By Dan Hanzus
Around the League Writer
Published: March 17, 2014 at 04:06 p.m.
Brandon Weeden has quickly found a new home.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the former Cleveland Browns quarterback has signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys, according to a team source. Weeden, 30, received a two-year deal for the league minimum. He still has $2.1 million guarantees on his rookie deal with the Browns.

Weeden met with the Cowboys on Monday, one week after the former first-round pick was released after two seasons in Cleveland in which he went 5-15 as a starter and posted a passer rating of 71.8. Kyle Orton is under contract to return as Tony Romo's backup, though the veteran is believed to be undecided about returning for another season.

Weeden was well-regarded by the Cowboys coming out of Oklahoma State, and the team clearly had him on their radar after it became clear a new regime in Cleveland intended to move on. Rapoport reported that Weeden also spoke with the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals following his release.

Weeden acts as a cost-effective insurance policy for the Cowboys as they wait for official word on Orton. Even if Orton returns, the Cowboys could potentially keep three quarterbacks on their roster, something they haven't done since 2011. It's also possible the Cowboys look to trade Orton, who is regarded as one of the league's more capable backup QBs.

Weeden was in desperate need of a fresh start. Now he's got it.

The "Around The League Podcast" breaks down all the free agency moves and hands out a fleet of high-octane sandwiches.

Sad really. Both Richardson and Weeden aren't on that team any longer.

Weeden's gonna carve out a nice little backup career in this league without doing one damn thing well.

Now we know why Irsay went out and got messed up. He missed out on his replacement for Luck.

Its amazing how much money you can make in the NFL by just being average to completely shitty at your job.
