NFT: Penguins' sale falls through

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2698928

As I watch the Pens play the Isles right now, I can't help but feel excited that this team may somehow, someway find its way to KC. What a great team with a nucleus of young superstars.

Penguins no longer for sale, will consider new home

ESPN.com news services

The other shoe dropped in Pittsburgh on Thursday -- and fears that the Penguins are playing their last season in the Steel City were legitimized when team owner Mario Lemieux said the team is no longer for sale and will look outside Pennsylvania for a new home while continuing to seek a new arena in Pittsburgh.

"Recent developments, including yesterday's decision by the [state gaming control board] and the recent termination of the purchase agreement by Jim Balsillie, have convinced us that it is time to take control of our own destiny," Lemieux said in a statement. "Accordingly, starting [Thursday], the team is off the market, and we will begin to explore relocation options in cities outside Pennsylvania."

The team had lobbied for Isle of Capri Casinos to be granted a license to operate slot machines in Pittsburgh, as the developer had pledged to build a new arena at no cost to the Penguins to replace 45-year-old Mellon Arena. But the board instead awarded the license to Detroit-based casino developer Don H. Barden's PITG Gaming. Barden's group proposes building a casino and entertainment development on the city's North Shore, near Heinz Field and PNC Park -- a plan the Steelers and Pirates both strongly opposed.

"After seven years of trying to work out a new arena deal exclusively in Pittsburgh, we need to take into consideration the long-term viability of the team and begin discussions with other cities that may be interested in NHL teams," Lemieux said in the statement. The Isle of Capri rejection came only five days after Balsillie unexpectedly pulled out of his $175 million deal to buy the franchise, apparently because the NHL wanted him to commit to not moving the Penguins. Balsillie had been expected to close on the deal late last week.
Great news!!!

And with the Penguins playing in the other Conference I will not feel as torn.

Well, I'm sure Penguins fans are about as crushed as you can be over this. It's too bad. The funny part that I didn't realize till yesterday... Jerome Bettis was a part of the group that won the casino bid... some of the Pens fans aren't too happy with him. But I'm sure the NHL 21 group from KC is all over this... there was an article in the Star today about it, I think everybody is already ready to pounce, they just have to sell it.

One of those guys was on the local news last night saying that he thought the chances of KC having a team next year were 'better than 50%'. It wasn't unequivocally about the Penguins, just having some NHL team.

I think we need to show a commitment to keeping the streets of Kansas City safe by going with NHL instead of NBA.

Depends on the team.........

A hockey team would probably cut more into the Royals than the Chiefs, other than the people who are completely fed up with the Chiefs. It's not nearly as hard to be "competitive" in hockey as football or baseball seeing as half the league makes the playoffs.....

I don't know that it would really cut into either that much, but we will have to see. The city is dying to support a winner.

Well an example is someone like my dad. He goes to some Royals games every year but if there was a hockey team he'd put that money into that and not see any Royals games.

If the team were in the playoff race and made the playoffs they could cut into a good 2 months of Royals season....

I've been watching the Pens me4ssage boards, still and also listening to Pittsburgh sports radio. They are trying their hardest to believe, but the overriding feeling is that the Pens are gone.
It's pretty sad reading the Pens boards, as I can imagine it would be painful if this were our Chiefs on their way out, and there are a couple of classless KC rooters on there rubbing it in. On the radio, though, the more their afternoon guy talks, the more I root against them staying there.

Cmon McGannon and Robitaille.... get this done. Bring me hockey!!!!

i imagine KC has a pretty good chance now

i mean the owner is now looking to relocate because he couldn't get a new arena.

we have a brand new hockey sized arena without a primary tenant.

unless he can find a bigger city with an arena just sitting there for the taking.....

BTW,
I don't think they'd have to win in KC right away. If they could get people to watch ONE game, they'd be hooked. Heck, the new arena will probably get the people in the door; the young Penguins will do the rest.
