RIP Fred. Grew up listening to him and Matthews together, along with Denny Trease. Sometimes I preferred listening to the radio broadcasts over the TV if it was on both. In those days home games were never televised in KC area.

Hearne with the ugly on why White was fired in 98 , then brought back.

At the time of White’s axing he was making around $160,000 and partnering with Denny Matthews who was taking down more than $200,000.

The object of the game, sources say, was to reduce Entercom’s overhead by hiring someone for less money (Ryan Lefebvre was brought in to replace White at a salary of around $100,000) and the Royals “chose” to fire White instead of Matthews to meet that goal.

However public outcry was so great, that following a huge faux pas by then Royals general manager Herk Robinson stating publicly that the team wanted more youth in the broadcast booth, White threatened to file an EEOC complaint that could have lead to a lawsuit and was hired back and given a made up job as “affiliates manager.”

Radio Station group managers and baseball execs both exist in slimy, ethics-neutral worlds. If you have thin skin, you better stay out of both professions. Fred White did just fine, thank you. He did lots of college basketball besides doing Royals baseball, and I'm sure he was somewhat relieved to get off the grind of doing all those road trips to Cleveland. Denny has reduced his travel schedule a lot too. No doubt the Royals have coddled Denny more, because for whatever reason, he's the favorite son.

Thanks for posting that.

That's actually a pretty cool way to watch a baseball game on TV.
