Ditto everyone. There's a quite popular DVD of the Broadway version with Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett. The singing is much better and its less "in your face." Plus they include more jokes.
The purpose of the musical was to be extremely light-hearted with a dramatic tragedy at the end. Burton didn't include any of that at all. All he did was add blood and took out quite a few of the funny parts. |
