How hard is it to back up a server?

Having lost our tech guy that's the next thing on my list of new responsibilities.

I need to back up the information and take it off sight in case of a fire or something. I need to back up this information every 3 days and take it home with me. I need to save everything in our ACT data base as well as anything we use with our clients.

Not hard. But we need a little more information about the server - hardware, function, open databases, etc.

Asssuming you have a tape drive and backup software already it's a piece of cake (generally speaking). I reccomend getting a safety deposit box at a bank to store the tapes in rather than storing them at home. I'd also reccomend testing your tapes to make certain you're actually backing up the data and not producing blank tapes (I've seen this happen).

I recommend spending a bunch of money and have a qualified individual assess, document, impliment, and test a disaster recovery plan. If I were still in the business, you could have had me do it for $3k.

I'd imagine you'll pay anywhere from $3-5k in your neck of the woods.

Yeah, you can learn a lot from a bunch of computer geeks on the 'net, but unless one of us is onsite with your hardware to assess the situation, we can't possibly begin to offer a plan that is bulletproof for your company's needs.

I was just curious as the tech guys down here that help me out are not available and I wanted to see if it was complicated. I figured out how to backup our ACT database. I just need to burn that information and get it out of here for safe keeping now.

BTW thanks for the info.

Great advice. $5K sounds pretty cheap, actually.
