whaaa?
Moving an operating system from 1 drive to another? You would need to use a backup/imaging software like Ghost or Acronis, and I don't even know if that would work if the drives weren't the same size. I've never really tried this because doing a fresh install just makes me feel better. |

Man, there's a lot that can go wrong doing that. Even if you get the data copied over, you still have to worry about aligning the sectors and such. If you install Windows 7 directly onto an SSD (instead of cloning) the installation program makes sure that everything is aligned properly and that the outmoded sector-based system works fine on the SSD. If you clone onto an SSD from a HDD, however, there is a very high probability that the alignment will be off. What this means, is that you will radically increase your SSD read/writes and decrease performance because of the poor alignment. You’ll be wearing out and slowing down the drive, all over something as tiny as data misalignment.
I'd highly recommend just backing up documents and data and installing Windows from scratch on the SSD. HDDs and SSDs are just too different to easily clone and the potential for massive ****s is very high. Including actually damaging your new SSD.

This can be done. I replaced a hard drive on a mini laptop with an SSD. To make things more difficult the laptop did not have an optical drive.
I found a copy of Windows and loaded it onto a thumb drive and then moved it to the laptop. It was a "pure" version of Windows which did not have any manufacturer bloat. |

Just reload. Get a cheap SATA dock, plug your old drive into it, and pull your data over.

So did the fresh install work correctly on SSD or did it just not work after you tried to clone over the fresh install?
It really about what cloning program you use. Many of them don't handle the boot sectors correctly.

Empty or offload your HDD and clone that bitch, it will transfer right over like nothing happened. Also make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the correct drive.
I can help you when I get home tonight on TS |

There are backup apps that will make those changes for you though. Google something like "Clone Windows 7 to ssd", and you should find lots of info.

Best solution is to use a package to capture your image, then reapply that image to the SSD when you are done. Do you have a copy of ghost?

I just did the shit a month ago, and then optimized for SSD myself in a few minutes, not to mention the cloning software did most of it for me. All I had to do was point the windows libraries etc to the HDD. Cant remember which software I used but can recommend when I get home. Don't try and complicate it~ My statement still stands. Clone the ****ing drive with software and be done with it. |

Can I just put my Games on the SSD and not the OS? I dont really care that much from the time I hit the button I'm on my desktop within 30 seconds.
