Peyton Manning medically cleared to resume NFL career

mortreportChris Mortensen
Peyton Manning medically cleared to resume NFL career, per sources. More coming on ESPN now. #NFL32

Peyton Manning has been medically cleared by two doctors, including Dr. Robert Watkins, who performed the most recent surgery on the Indianapolis Colts quarterback's neck, to resume his NFL career, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

ManningWatch: The Latest from ESPN.com

ESPN.com's NFL Nation bloggers check in with the latest on Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. Blog
The sources said Watkins examined Manning recently in Los Angeles and concluded the stability in his neck would have allowed the quarterback to play this Sunday if the nerves in his arm had regenerated to a satisfactory performance level.

Watson also instructed the quarterback to continue an aggressive rehabilitation path that provides an optimistic outlook for Manning to play in 2012. Watkins performed Manning's spinal fusion on Sept. 8, and on Dec. 1 declared that the fusion had achieved "firm fixation."

Watkins, according to the sources, joined Colts neurosurgeon Dr. Hank Feuer in clearing Manning to play. One source said that Feuer recently told Manning, "If you were my own son, I'd tell (you) to go play."

In addition to Manning's optimistic words expressed in an interview with ESPN on Tuesday, in which he indicated he plans to resume his playing career, the medical clearance by his two doctors, the sources said, will bolster his determination to play in 2012.

What remains in question is the timeline in which Manning's nerve regeneration to his triceps will improve to the point where he is throwing passes in the manner that helped him win four MVP awards during his 13-year career.

Manning

According to one source familiar with Manning's medical review, "It's not a safety issue; it's a performance issue." This source added that Manning is "making progress."

The source said Manning had a throwing session Tuesday with two of his Colts receivers -- Anthony Gonzalez and Blair White -- at an undisclosed location and that Manning has spent numerous recent days throwing to at least one wide receiver, aiming to regain as much strength as possible in his arm.

However, the source said Manning still cannot pinpoint a date when his performance will reach an acceptable level to him. The source alluded that it might take to the one-year anniversary of Manning's May 23rd, 2011 surgery on a bulging disk in his neck.

We have no idea what is going to happen. If he regains his strength then his value skyrockets. If not, he's done.

I don't think the Colts will know either way before having to decide about paying the bonus.

If the Colts cut him, do you sign him even if you don't know for sure about the strenght for a small deal?

good question

You would be on the hook for paying the big bonus though, so the decision would be a tough one.

i assume that Manning will have to go through waivers?!?

I think there would have to be clauses in the contract that Manning won't be willing to agree too. But then again any smart team is going to have said clauses. No one is going to pay him big $'s blindly. Or at least you wouldn't think they would. And if he doesn't agree to such it may very well limit his choices of where he goes. He may get stuck going where he has too as opposed to wants too.

If someone signs him I doubt they are paying that roster bonus. Or atleast they shouldn't.

I'd sign him to a deal of alot lesser value and see if he can get healthy, if he can't you are out some money.

If he was really recovering well and throwing the ball well, the Colts would pay him.

Manning would have to agree to that and he probably wouldn't.

Why agree to that when he can force complete free agency and get to pick the team of his choice?

Luck and Manning would count as almost 50 million dollars against the cap next year if they were to have both on the roster.

That amount would be crippling for the team to have any chance at competing with the new cap rules.

For a 36 year old quarterback with a broken neck and nerve damage in his throwing arm, Im not sure if they woudnt move on with the top pick and Luck sitting there....if they move on they would also be able to have another 35 million dollars or so to spend in free agency.

Unless he is 100%, I dont see Manning in Indy.

He wouldn't go through waivers, he's well past the veteran cutoff. He'd be a FA immediately. His roster bonus would die as soon as the Colts released him.

The only time he'd have to clear waivers would be if he was cut during the season after the trade deadline, like Orton was this past year.

I disagree only because of the way they seem to be cleaning house in Indy. I think they said "**** it, this is as good as time as any to start rebuilding".

I mean ****, Reggie Wayne is getting old, Adai can't stay healthy, Clark is about to fall apart, the O-line is dysfunctional. They've had their run and I think injury to Peyton just pushed them further to realization that the rest of their team rather stinks.
