Offseason Forecast: Kansas City Chiefs

Offseason Forecast: Kansas City Chiefs

By Kareem Copeland
Around the League Writer

What's changing

With the offseason officially under way, Around the League will examine what's next for all 32 teams.

AFC East
» Bills | Dolphins | Jets | Patriots
AFC North
» Bengals | Browns | Ravens | Steelers
AFC South
» Colts | Jaguars | Texans | Titans
AFC West
» Broncos | Chargers | Chiefs | Raiders

Administration. Wave buh-bye to general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel. Say hello to GM John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid. The Chiefs went 23-41 under Pioli and are in the exact same position as the organization was when he was hired -- coming off a 2-14 season. Dorsey is a descendant from the Ron Wolf/Green Bay Packers front office tree. Reid is one of the most established coaches in the NFL with a strong offensive reputation.
Biggest free agents

» WR Dwayne Bowe: The wide receiver wants to be paid like one of the league's top receivers, but only sporadically plays like it. And then there's the attitude baggage.

» T Branden Albert: A legit starting tackle. Money could be the deciding factor because the Chiefs can easily replace him with the No. 1 pick.

» P Dustin Colquitt: The 2012 Pro Bowler has played in all but two games during his eight years in Kansas City.

» RB Peyton Hillis: The nearly 1,200-rushing yard, 11-touchdown effort in 2010 has to be considered a fluke at this point -- even if there have been injury issues. But the Chiefs need a bruiser to complement Jamaal Charles.

» DE Glenn Dorsey: Hasn't been the dominant force that earned the No. 5 overall pick at LSU, but has started all but three games in the last four seasons.

Other key free agents: QB Brady Quinn, G Ryan Lilja, LB Brandon Siler

Best of 2012: Kansas City Chiefs
Take a look at the best photos from the Kansas City Chiefs 2012 season.
What they need

Quarterback, quarterback, quarterback. Matt Cassel has proven himself unable to be the franchise guy in four years as the starter. He was hand-picked by Pioli to come along from New England and never blossomed into the player that went 10-5 as the Patriots starter in 2008. The problem: There are no sure-fire prospects in the draft and the free-agent pool is weak. Dorsey would have to trade for a Alex Smith or Kevin Kolb type if he's set on addressing the position this offseason. Remember, though, Dorsey was brought up in a draft-and-develop system.
Offseason crystal ball

The Chiefs will draft at least one quarterback, but not with the No. 1 overall pick. They'll possibly bring another in to compete with Cassel and the rookie. There won't be a quick-fix under center. Texas A&M tackle Luke Joeckel might be the guy at No. 1, especially if Albert is allowed to walk. There are six 2012 Pro Bowlers on the roster, so there's talent in K.C. But you can't get out the blocks in today's NFL without a legit quarterback. That's the No. 1 job for Dorsey and Reid.

"to compete with Cassel" is a sentence that should get a journalist fired

But what's even worse is actual chiefs fans hoping Cassel gets the job.

No surprises here, same old shit. Chiefs can't take a QB at the #1 spot, but it's the biggest need. These articles make my head hurt.

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Whats this based on Kareem? So if you're wrong how will that sit with the "around the league" universe of prognostication?

I am starting to think there needs to be a banner flown around Arrowhead, prior to the draft. Maybe more than one.

Anything short of cleaning house at QB, except Stanzi and drafting one first round is not acceptable.
