Robotics coach arrested for child porn

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A West Lafayette man charged with distributing child pornography has been fired by the West Lafayette Community School Corporation.

27-year-old Carl Ross Agnew was an assistant coach for West Lafayette High School's robotics team. Agnew was charged after an FBI investigation that got underway in September 2010. Police served a search warrant at Agnew's apartment in West Lafayette on Tuesday. According to the U.S. Attorney's office, Agnew was sharing images depicting children engaged in sexual activity with adult men. A probable cause affidavit stated that Agnew was sending the images through a peer-to-peer file sharing program under the name of "Brighteyedboy".

The U.S. Attorney said Agnew admitted to police he collected "thousands" of images of child pornography and stored them on his computer.

West Lafayette Community School Superintendent Rocky Killion said Agnew has been fired from his coaching position. Killion said Agnew had limited contact with students in that position. He said the school corporation always does federal background checks on employees before they are hired.

The organization FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), which sponsors robotics and other engineering competitions, released a statement Thursday evening indicating that Agnew was being banned as a volunteer for FIRST pending the outcome of this case.

Agnew has been taken into custody by the U.S. Marshal Service.

My children are not sharp enough to join the robotics team but I know some students who are in that team. My daughter said that Mr. Agnew is a very well-liked individual. Many students are very upset about this news. Some of them didn't show up to class.

Hopefully the worst of it was only child porn, and not something like inviting Tim Jones Jr. from the robotics team over to the house for extra research.

There was an article a few months ago in the NY Times about sentencing for these guys. I tried finding it after they ran it, but I never could. It outlined how these child porn criminals are getting light sentences. A lot of times the perp has a good lawyer, and he says he was just looking, and not engaging, and ends up getting less time than a weed dealer. It makes me sick. I feel like people that look at it are keeping the market for it active, and they should be punished accordingly.

People like this cause an interesting problem. He's obviously a POS, but putting him away forever will cost a fortune to keep him for life. Now, is the solution to reduce any amenities he receives in prison so much so that he's living at or near poverty level or just exterminate him like the vermin he is.

My understanding is the general population of inmates don't like child molesters, so the guards turning their gaze for a minute or two could be advantageous.

No, it's true. The problem is that after they get beaten of killed, they or their family sue the prison, the warden, the guards and anyone else they can name. Which creates a really disgusting situation where taxpayers pay money in damages to a child molester. Prisons normally tell these people to say they're in prison for something else.

what exactly qualifies as "child porn"? I mean, is it video of some old man molesting 6-year-old boys? or is it playboy-type pics of some girl who turns out to be 17?

I know that you can get a sex offender label just by taking a piss in a public place, and wonder if the same is happening with the "child porn" label.

However, he did not actually molest anyone or hurt anyone, so at what point do you treat this as a sickness? A form of porn addiction?
