The poll is about the best ATHLETE, not who has the most stamina or who dominated their individual sport the most. I'm sorry, but Lance Armstrong is not anywhere near the same type of athlete as a guy like Jim Brown or Bo Jackson, guys who could probably dominate any sport they put their mind to.

Also, like him or hate him, Neon Deion was a stud of an athlete and was great in pro football and baseball. He had the fastest 40 time at the combines in history, until it was broken this year by Fabian Washington. The guy just defines the word "athlete".

Many people either don't know or have forgotten that Armstrong was a world-class triathlete as well. You, running and swimming as well as cycling.

I don't know about "world-class", I have only heard that he did very well as a kid and competed against kids the same age.

Again, Lance Armstrong has made a great career for himself, but if we are talking pure "athlete", I would put a lot of guys ahead of him.

He actually competed against much older guys, and won.

One entry found for athlete.
Main Entry: ath·lete
Pronunciation: 'ath-"lEt, ÷'a-th&-"lEt
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Latin athleta, from Greek athlEtEs, from athlein to contend for a prize, from athlon prize, contest
: a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina

I don't know if winning arguably the most physically-challenging sporting event in the world seven times in a row makes Armstrong the greatest athlete ever, but it sure as h*ll puts him in the top 5.

Yes, we all know that he won the Tour De France 7 times, but that just means he is a fantastic ENDURANCE athlete, not just a great overall athlete. I guess my definition of a great athlete is different then yours, I don't consider Lance Armstrong one of best athletes of our era.

It's not just about endurance. To win the Tour once, let alone seven times, requires tremendous power as well, and agility. Going down a mountain at 70 mph on two tires less than an inch across requires a certain amount of agility, not to mention tremendous courage.

So, by the definition I provided, I'd say that more than makes Armstrong a strong contender.

Out of curiosity, what is your definition?

I guess I consider guys like Bo Jackson, Jim Thorpe, Jim Brown, and even Deion better athletes because I feel that they could excel at pretty much any athletic sport they put their mind to. I feel like if you put one of these guys and Lance Armstrong out to compete on a basketball court, or a tennis court, or a sand volleyball pit, etc., the aforementioned guys would be better at the sport right off the bat then Lance.

Now if they all had one year to train for this particular sport, then Lance would probably be comparable and may even be better at certain ones. However, when comparing pure, god-given, natural athletic ability, I think Lance falls just a bit short of the guys I named earlier. I'm not saying i'm right and you're wrong, but this is just my opinion.

Just as Lance Armstrong is both very strong and very fast. So how did you reach the conclusion that if you were to take the fish out of the water and put them somewhere else, that the guys you mention would immediately be successful in comparison to Lance?
