Here's some info I dug up concerning Brunell's contract talks with Jax. Kinda long, but interesting:
"Brunell continues to insist that he deserves a huge signing bonus, somewhere in the $15 - $20 million range. The Jaguars have offered Brunell $10 million. The Jaguars do not want to pay Brunell his signing bonus in one lump sum. They would like to spread the money out over three years. Brunell does not like that scenario at all. Another problem seems to be that the team does not want to agree to a deal that guarantees Brunell will receive a certain amount of money through the first few years of the contract. Bledsoe is guaranteed to receive $30 million in the first four years. The Jaguars just can't seem to find a way to afford that. " "Brunell is seeking a long-term deal expected to be similar in compensation to the early years of the contract signed by Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe last week. Bledsoe signed a 10-year, $103 million extension that will pay him an estimated $30 million over the first four years. Packers quarterback Brett Favre, a three-time NFL Most Valuable Player, recently agreed to an extension that will pay $32 over the next four years. Brunell, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, turned down the Jaguars' offer of a six-year, $31 million contract with a $10 million bonus just before the March 1 cap deadline." "The Jaguars are under the cap with Brunell on the roster, which means they can retain him as their quarterback, or his rights, indefinitely. As Weaver told jaguars.com in January, one strategy for retaining Brunell was to fit his current contract under the cap, then slap him with the "franchise tag" at the end of next season, if a new deal couldn't be reached. The Jaguars can do that indefinitely, which means Brunell would be paid the average of the top five quarterback salaries in the league, but without a signing bonus. Such a scenario would further strap the Jaguars' cap, since salary must be declared in full in the year it is paid, but the lack of a signing bonus offers a team the potential for a full and immediate escape. For example, a "franchise player" who suffers a career-ending injury can be released without the team having to claim him on future caps. Book closed. " |

They seem beyond committed to keeping him...
They Can't afford him, but neither can we if his demands don't budge... |

I just don't see any way that he doesn't stay there. He's got too much invested in the area not to stay and he's an icon, even if slightly tarnished over this. I still say all of this is negotiation banter at our expense. We're going along though, so maybe there is something more to it than that...

I LOVE it when a thread gets long AND informative! Thanks, 'zod!
I like SOMe of the names the Chiefs are looking at, but I don't know if they'll be able to sign the likes of Dilfer, Brunell, Green... Tony Banks?!? Hmmmm... that might work. Sounds familiar.

I can't believe the Chiefs are talking about Brunell. Not that I wouldn't like to see him at Arrowhead, but, after digging ourselves out of cap hell, and now pinching pennies, why would they arbitrarily jump back in the pit for, not just this year, but years to come. I, for one, do not think it will happen. As far as the rest of the QBs, my choice would be Martin, let him and Collins fight it out, and look to next year. Of all of them, Banks is the one I can't stand. For Gods sake, he is a proven loser in St. Louis and Baltimore.

I don't know how reliable this is, but last night the Jacksonville newscaster on channel 4 said that the Chiefs have offered a #1, a #3 and another player for Brunell. That other player could be just a future pick or someone currently on the roster.

The thing that I find interesting (someone may have brought this up) is that the Jaguars contacted us. That says to me that they are not completely convinced they should keep Brunell (this may have already been obvious to some). Also, with the current cap situation (read the article on NFL Scoop), it looks like they are horribly screwed if they try and keep him (this is all dependent on a larger restructuring of MBs contract). They don't even have practice squad people signed and have fewer than the 53-man roster maximum signed...this while being only 128,000 dollars under the current cap.

Add to all of this the fact that the cap is slated to be increased by $8 million next year and it begins to make the Brunell in Kansas City deal look feasible. Of course I'm always convinced I'm going to win the Power Ball drawing as well.
