New 'puter for the office
I'm looking at replacing the two systems. Currently, I have systems 4 years old. Gateway Professionals Pentium III 866 MHz, 254 mb RAM, 20 gig hard drive.
They do O.K. Mostly interfacing with the internet to down load files. We have a broadband connection, works well. There's a chance that I won't have to upgrade the office managers system. Mine, though, is required to do a fair amount of number crunching. Additionally, I'd like to do a little gaming after hours. Tradionally, when I replace, I go towards the high end, up the RAM and the Hard drive. Through my company, Dell is providing volume discounts. The following are my choices. BASICS DESKTOPS $292 Dimension 3000 Celeron- Intel Celeron D 325 2.5GHz, 17 monitor, 256 mb SDRAM @ 400 MHz, 40 GB HD, 48x CD-RW, Windows XP $391 Dimension B100 (Basic Core Sys) Same everything, 80GB HD $489 Dimension 3000 Celeron (Basic Mid Sys) - Same, 512 MB SDRAM, 15" flat screen, 80GB HD $546 Dimension 3000 Pentium (Basic High End) - Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz, 17" flat screen, 512 MB SDRAM, 80 GB HD, 16x CD/DVD Burner ENTERTAINMENT DESKTOPS $489 Dimension E310 - Intel Pentuim 4 processor 521 w/HT Tech (whatever that means?) 2.8 GHz, 17" monitor, 256 MB SDRAM, 80 GB HD, 16x DVD ROM, Windows XP Media $677 Dimension E510 Same, 48xCD RW/ DVD ROM XPS SYSTEMS ( I guess these are the hot shots) $911 XPS 400 bunch of dual core processor mumbo jumbo stuff $959 XPS 200 same except more mumbo jumbo stuff $1644 XPS 600 same except a ton of mumbo jumbo dual stuff Again, for my system I'd like to play the new Doom Game. I'll probably have to add a better video card or something. Are these prices reasonable or can I get better value else where. I had thought about building a system...juries still out on that one. Get the best XPS you can as those are Dell's attempt at a gaming pc's. Dual core will make it easier to do multiple things at once like play doom 3 and do actual work stuff at the same time. or just enocde a dvd, whatever. Add a 2405 fpw monitor ftw.

I was hoping the Basic High End would work with adding a good video card. I really don't want to spend 1.5K on a system when I don't game that much.
How difficult would it be to build one. I don't mind spending $500 on a system from Dell if it would satisfy most my needs. But I'm not going to spend 1.5k...I'd try and build instead. ~Back Under Rock~ |
